CHAPTER XI.
SPINNING ANOTHER WEB.
My surmise was correct. The next morning when
I went down to breakfast I was approached in the lobby
by a sleek, prosperous appearing man. He was of
medium height, blonde and had "gander" eyes. He was
quick-mannered and dapper.
"Fine morning!" said he.
"Fine indeed !" I replied.
"Little bit cool, but brisk weather always invigorates
I think," he continued approvingly.
"Yes it's cool, and I dare say it'll be cooler before
it gets warm again!"
"Yes, yes, no doubt," he said, throwing his cigarette
into the open fire.
"I believe I heard you mention a celery farm. I
happened to be passing through the lobby last evening.
and I thought I understood you to say you intended
purchasing one. -^IMy name is Johnson." He offered me
a well manicured, smooth, taper-fingered hand.
"My name's Parkinson. I'm from Blackwell, Oklahoma.
Glad to meet you, Mr. Johnson !" I said, wringing
his hand and wishing it were his neck.
"Oh, yes," I continued casually, "I believe I did
tell that old gentleman and his wife about the celery
farm I hope to purchase. I went out to look at one
last night and got mud up to my ears, almost. It's
dirty work, this personal inspection, but a man cannot
afford to sink forty or fifty thousand dollars into the
mud, unless he's sure it's rich mud, can he?" I smiled
disarmingly.
To hear me mention a mere fifty thousand dollars.
one would have thought I might expect to use the mud
for mud pies.
"Do you expect to sink that amount in a celery
farm?" he asked in well feigned amazement.
