NORFLEET
"Fine!" he exclaimed and rose from his chair,
"Then that's settled."
We went to another celery estate and looked it over.
On this occasion I thought it not necessary to get my
feet so muddy.
When we returned I appeared favorably impressed
with the land and again Johnson launched into a "knocking"
campaign. As soon as we entered the hotel he
got in a great hurry and began to fire directions to the
hotel clerk about sending the bell boy up for his luggage
and gettting his bill made out.
"Are you going to stay down at the Beach?" I asked.
"Yes I may for a day or two," he replied. Then
as if it were an afterthought, he suggested I take my
bag along as we might want to remain over night.
"Not want to," I thought, "probably have to!"
I did not act very enthusiastic over the prospect
of the trip, as I did not want to spoil matters.
He seemed to sense my indifference and tried to
hustle me along before I changed my mind. All of this
play on his part indicated to me that there was a trap
ahead ready for me to step into.
Before leaving I examined my guns and put two
in my bag and two on myself.
We got started about three in the afternoon.
"Won't we be pretty late for the races?" I asked.
"Well, I am afraid we will," he said regretfully.
"But there is a County Fair going on this week so we
can make the races tomorrow."
Ah! a county fair, I mused. The best stamping
ground in the world for the light-fingered gentry.
My reverie was interrupted by Johnson springing
to his feet. He bounded across the aisle and looked out
of the car window in the opposite seat. He motioned me
to follow him.
I arose. From his excitement I thought perhaps an
alligator was swallowing the Florida coast.
