ought to have a look at it before deciding definitely on
this acreage out there."
He indicated with a deprecating jerk of his head,
the adjacent property.
"There are going to be some automobile races this
afternoon down at the Beach, and I would like to have
you go along as my guest. We could spend a pleasant
day and it would give you an opportunity to give that
location the 'once over.' How does that strike you?"
I thought he was a trifle too eager. "It's very kind
of you," I said, but I still held out for Sanford celery.
"Well," he compromised, "tell you what let's do.
I'll go with you to look at the new prospect if you'll
go this morning, then this afternoon you come to the
races with me, as I said before, as my guest! It will
not take long to get to Daytona Beach and we'll have a
good time. That's fair, isn't it?"
He certainly was heavy on the "guest." I considered.
There was no question but that Johnson was
a plant. I knew that the "big link" in the confidence
chain was quartered in this hotel. The other slickers,
who were pacing up and down the lobby the evening before
were now nowhere to be seen. They were under
cover until the right time.
Johnson had some game he wanted to pull off in
Daytona Beach. If I went with him I might get out
alive. If I did escape from his trap, I might gain some
knowledge of the whereabouts of Furey and Spencer.
They might even be there! It was a chance.
"Yes, that sounds fair," I replied, "and I'll accept
on your very kind terms."
I was determined that he shouldn't get the better
of me with his politeness. It always amused me to note
how well these crooks played their roles. No character
actors surpass them.
Johnson began to fit into the groove. He had a
certain patronizing manner which they all have.
