"Oh!" said I apologetically, "it's not a great deal
of money to be sure, but still it's enough to buy a nice
little garden and more than I want to lose!"
"Of course-of course. Naturally you would not
want to lose it. That is just the point. I think I can
be of help to you, Mr.-Mr.-."
"Parkinson!" I supplied.
"Mr. Parkinson, I beg your pardon. I am not quick
to remember names, but faces! I never miss those."
I felt like telling him I didn't either; that was why
I was looking at him so hard.
"Can't we find a comfortable seat?" he asked, looking
for a chair. He found one and dragged it up beside
another, well within the sunny window which looked out
on the not far distant celery beds.
We talked for sometime. He told me that he hated
to see anyone put a lot of money in celery unless he was
an experienced celery raiser. He informed me the overhead
expense would eat up all the profits and I would
find only too late that I had made a poor investment.
Besides after I had had the place awhile I would not
be able to sell to an advantage, as the farm would exhibit
proof of my inability as an agriculturist and therefore
discourage a purchaser. He really knew more
about what I was going to do with the farm than I did.
He was a good, convincing talker and had I been in
earnest about buving the property I feel sure he would
have talked me out of it. However I did not let him
think that what he said against it was making the least
difference to me.
I invited him to go with me to inspect some other
farm property which I planned to look over in the afternoon.
He declined, saying that he thought he would take
in the races at Daytona Beach.
"That's some fine country for you!" he exclaimed.
"If I were going to invest in farm lands, I would certainly
consider Daytona, or property near there. Really,
Parkinson," laying an advisory hand on my arm, "you
