BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
EDUCATION 422. PRINCIPLES AND PHILOSOPHY OF GUIDANCE
SERVICES. An introduction to the field of school guidance, including
both elementary and secondary schools. The course is suitable
for classroom teachers, counsels, supervisors, and administrators.
Emphasis is given to the basic principles underlying the services
rendered by such personnel. Topics considered will include:
records, profile charts, job analysis, finding and using occupational
information, student placement and follow-up work, and standardized
tests. Three semester hours.
EDUCATION 423. HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. How
individuals grow and develop, the stages or steps through which
they go in the process, and the factors which influence them are
considered in this course. The purpose of the course is to develop
an understanding of children and to engender a real interest
in them. Three semester hours.
EDUCATION 501. STUDIES AFFECTING ELEMENTARY EDUCATION.
This course is planned for elementary majors and graduate students
needing to acquaint themselves with the objectives and
methods of educational research as applied to the problems of
elementary education. Three semester hours.
EDUCATION 502. PROBLEMS IN TEACHING READING. It is the
purpose of this course to give the student a comprehensive knowledge
of the literature on the teaching of reading process, an opportunity
for critical evaluation of the methods and materials of
reading instruction, and a specific requirement for consideration
of the research investigations in the teaching of reading. Three
semester hours.
EDUCATION 503. WORKSHOP IN ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM
DEVELOPMENT. This course is designed to develop a definite understanding
of factors controlling the growth and development
of specific curriculum problems. Opportunity is provided for the
student to select and study intensively some chosen aspects of the
elementary-school curriculum. Three semester hours.
EDUCATION 504. PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. Special
advanced study will be made of given problems in children's literature
in such fields as mythology, poetry, folk lore, etc. Three
semester hours.
EDUCATION 505. EVALUATION AND GUIDANCE IN THE ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL. This course, designed for administrators, supervisors,
and classroom teachers in the elementary school, emphasizes
testing and other evaluative techniques necessary for an
effective guidance program. Three semester hours.86
