DEPARTM1ENT OF EDUCATION
The underlying philosophy of the teacher-education program
in Howard Payne College is based on cooperative enterprise
and the unification of personal and nrofessional goals toward the
development of greater teacher competency. Therefore, the purpose
of teacher education is to give teachers in training a knowldge
of the ethics and program of the teaching profession; to
afford them practical experience in working together in a democratic
way on the problem of the profession and the community;
to interest the best young people in teaching as a lifelong career;
to emphasize character and scholarship on the part of prospective
teachers; and to encourage them to acquaint themselves thoroughly
with a body of subject-matter in their teaching fields.
A student interested in teaching should begin early in his
college career to plan a program leading to this objective. He
must plan his work in the field of professional education with a
member of the education faculty who will advise him on degree
and certificate requirements. Education 121 will be taken as a
first course by those who begin work in the education department.Courses in the Department of Education are classified as
