BULLETIN, OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
Tennison of San Saba raised a fund to dedicate the main reading
room to our late Bible professor.
T. C. and Ellen Yantis Memorial Buildings. The heirs of Mr.
T. C. Yantis who served many years as president of the Board of
Trustees have given the Yantis Homestead for the use of the
college. Young women will occupy the buildings until the new
girls dormitory is erected. Then the property will be used for a
historical and art memorial for Howard Payne College and Central
Texas.
L. J. Mims Auditorium and Fine Arts Building. The general
plan of this building is as follows: First floor, large chapel; second
floor, several large class rooms, and balcony of auditorium; third
floor, Fine Arts Studios and practice rooms. The building has
been named in honor of Dr. L. J. Mims, a former president of the
College. Under the leadership of Dr. Mims, funds were raised
for the erection of the building.
Physical Education Building. This building opened during
the session of 1939-1940 is a large brick and tile structure, facing
Fisk Avenue. It contains basketball courts, volley ball courts,
bowling alleys, offices and class rooms. The building, adapted
for a modern program of physical and health eduncation, is
widely used by students. It is rapidly becoming a center for physical
education activities for the high schools in their community
meets.
Girls Dormitory. A new four story girl's dormitory is under
construction on Center Avenue. It is four story, fire proof, electrically
heated and cooled. The new dormitory will contain guest
rooms, parlors, a large dining room and several smaller ones. It
will have rooms for 250 students. The building is expected to be
ready for occupancy in September, 1955.
Home Economics Cottage. The W.M.U. of the sixteenth district
under the presidency of Mrs. C. G. Sivells, a former student,
has erected and equipped a model cottage and laboratories for the
Home Economics Department. With this equipment the college
will place major emphasis on these practical subjects, not only
for the vocations, but also for the education of home-makers.
Infirmary. An Infirmary has been equipped on Center Avenue
with graduate nurse in charge.
Stephens Apartments. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Stephens have
given an annuity to Howard Payne College in a large apartment
center on Main and Clark Streets.
Student Center. One of the Camp Bowie buildings on Fisk
Avenue has been opened for a student center.-
