a great number of clippings and pamphlets dealing with the
American Negro. Former friends of the Reverend Mr. Vinson
have added a number of current books on sociology to the collection.
Mr. Truett Vinson regularly adds to this collection.
The Betty Shelton Historical Collection is the gift of the
children of Mrs. Betty Shelton of Brownwood. They are Mrs. J.
T. Floyd, Brownwood, Texas; Mr. Jack Shelton, deceased, Mr.
Joe Shelton, Brownwood, Texas; Miss Annie Shelton, Brownwood,
Texas; Mr. J. Horace Shelton, of Howard Payne College,
Brownwood, Texas; and Dr. Ben M. Shelton, deceased. This
collection contains a well-selected list of references in historyGreek,
Roman, European, American, and Latin-American.
J. H. Grove Library. Mrs. Blanche Lowe Grove at her death
gave to Howard Payne College the library of former President J.
H. Grove whose administration saved Howard Payne College in
the panic of 1893 and the early years of the college.
Roxy Grove Library. The late Dr. Roxy Grove willed her
library of a thousand volumes, most of them in the field of music,
to Howard Payne College. The library has been placed in the
Grove Memorial Room.
Jewell Daughety Library. The late Dr. Jewell Daughety
made many gifts in money and books to the Bible Department
library.
Brown County Papers. This collection contains many official
documents relating to the history of Brown County and the town
of Brownwood. Copies of the most significant historical documents
from the county records as well as many clippings and
letters dealing with the early history of Brown County are included
in the collection.
Through the generosity of Mr. Arch B. O'Flaherty, publisher
of the Brownwood News, the College came into possession of the
files of the Pecan Valley News beginning with the publication of
that newspaper in 1892. Included in the same gift is a file of the
Brownwood News under which title the Pecan Valley News was
continued. This material gives the library a complete source
covering forty years.
The collection also contains the only complete file now in
existence of the minutes of the Pecan Valley Baptist Association
and its successor, the Brown County Baptist Association.
The library contains almost fifteen thousand pamphlets and
regularly receives 250 magazines and periodicals. It also receives29
