24 BULLETIN OF HOWrARD PAYNE COLLEGE
Brownwood has ample hotel facilities. The Hotel Brownwood,
a $600,000 structure, is located in the heart of the city
and has ample facilities to accommodate any and all gatherings
within the city.
Through the construction of a dam and reservoir costing
$2,500,000, provision has been made for a supply of water for
present and future needs, the irrigation of a large body of land,
and protection against floods. Lake Brownwood is a beautiful lake
with excellent recreational possibilities. The dam which impounds
this body of water is situated just below the confluence of Pecan
Bayou and Jim Ned Creek, 9 miles north of the City of Brownwood.
This dam, which is of earth, is 1,600 feet long on top, 120
feet high and 600 feet in width at the bottom in the channel section
of the Bayou. This dam creates a lake about 17 miles in
length, having an area at spillway level of nearly 12 square miles
and a shore-line of 82 miles, more than 50 of which falls on steep
to precipitous slopes. This body of water lies in the midst of a
rugged wooded area, much of its shore being rock bound and
much of it marked by promontories and indentations which present
vistas of rare beauty. The Pecan Valley Chapter of the
[zaak Walton League of America has been organized for the
purpose of developing the recreational possibilities of Lake
Brownwood.
Brownwood is enjoying a steady and reasonably rapid
growth. The Federal Building is only one block from the campus.
The Santa Fe Railroad has spent a large sum of money in improving
its property, and in locating here its division, terminals
and shops. The main line of the Santa Fe system from Galveston
to San Francisco passes through Brownwood. Brownwood is becoming
the center of a rapidly developing oil field. The city
offers a good opportunity for investment to parents who wish to
move here in order to educate their children.
Brownwood has a very efficient system of public schools.
Five elementary schools along with well-organized Junior and
Senior High Schools make up the system. Daniel Baker College,
a co-educational institution, is also located in the city. In 1953
it joined Howard Payne College in a combined education program.DISTRICT SIXTEEN BAPTIST ENCAMPMENT
