BROWNWOOD
Brownwood, the county seat of Brown County is situated
only a few miles from the center of the State. The altitude is
about 1,500 feet above the Gulf. Brownwood has a population of
20,000 and its moral and intellectual tone is far superior to that
of most cities of the same size.
There are in the city forty-three churches, all possessing
commodious houses of worship. One weekly paper and one daily
are published. The city has excellent systems of telephone, water
works, electric lights, and gas works. Natural gas from nearby
fields furnishes fuel at a reasonable price.
Highways 67, 84, 83, 279, and 377 pass through Brownwood.
Portions of these highways have been designated by the federal
government to connect the Mexican Border with the great cities
of the north and east. Brown County has completed the construction
of a four million dollar paving program, which insures the
motoring public an all weather, all season automobile travel in
any direction.23
