COURSES OF INSTRUCTION
ENGLISH 2.-ENGLISH LITERATURE.
Fall, Winter, Spring. Three Hours a Week.
English Literature.-The history of English Literature is studied.
This course is designed to give the students a general view of the
history and development of English Literature, from the Old English
period to the present. The work is based primarily on the study
both outside the class and in the class, of selected masterpieces in
poetry and prise. Selections from the Old English period are read
in translations.
Prerequisite.-Course 1.
Textbooks.-Cunliffe, Pyre and Young, Century Readings. Moody
and Lovett, A History of English Literature.
ENGLISH 3. RHETORIC.
Advanced Course. Fall, Winter, Spring. Three Hours a Week.
Rhetoric.-This course deals with the principles of higher
rhetoric, not as questions of absolute right or wrong, but as questions
that govern real authorship in action.
Reading.-A fairly extensive list of selections illustrative of the
direrent types of literature and the various principles involved in
the four forms of discourse, is studied thoroughly. Written tests are
required on these readings..
Written Work.-Short stories or essays of from two to ten pages
are required every two weeks. Most of the essays are appreciations
of literature studied. Written tests are required frequently. One
thesis, consisting of at least one thousand words on some phase of
a subject connected with the course, is required each term. These
three theses are all to develop on general subjects chosen at the
beginning of the year.
Prerequisite.-Course 2 or equivalent.
Reference Works.-Albright, Descriptive Writing; Maxcy, The
Rhetorical Principles of Narration; Foster, Essentials of Exposition
and Argument; Foster, Argumentation and Debating; Baker and
Huntington, Principles of Argumentation. Some attention is given
to other books.
