Advanced Course. Spring. Three Hours a Week.
The work is based on the analysis of selections from the poetry
of Bryant, Whittier, Emerson, Longfellow, Poe,Holmes, Whitman
and Lanier.
Textbook.-Page, Chief American Poets.
Prerequisite.-Course. 2.
English 11, 12 and 13, given in alternate years. Not given in
1924-1925.
ENGLISH 5.-SHAKESPEARE.
Advanced Course.-Fall, Winter, Spring.-Three Hours a Week.
Shakespeare and Pre-Shakespearian Drama.-During the first
term, the history of English drama, from its inception to the sixteenth
century, is presented, and representative dramas are studied.
Dramatists contemporary with Shakespeare are given especial prominence.
During the second and third terms, Shakespeare's works are
read in their entirety and made the basis of papers prepared from
time to time by the students. The best Shakespearian criticism is
noted in the lectures.

Beginning course. Thorough study of the principles of French.
