Berry takes shot in Austin Saturday
When CHS Sophomore Caleb Berry competes at
the State track meet in Austin Saturday, he won't be
one of the bigger competitors, making his throwing
technique key
"I'm one of the smaller guys it seems like usually,"
Berry said. "The stronger you are, the less technique
you have to have. I tend to have to work on my tech-
nique quite a bit."
Coach Bruce Bryant says Berry is very dedicat-
ed, but not just during the season. "Throwing is what
he loves to do," he said. "He trains all year to do one
thing, and that is throw far."
His throwing technique begins with the base.
Berry said that a throwers legs are his most impor-
tant asset. "[The lower body] is way more important
than the upper body," he said. "At least that is what I
have always been taught."
Coach Bryant said Berry came into the season
with the strength and quickness, but needed to tune
his technique. "His style of throwing is the most tech-
nical form," Bryant said. "It takes a lot of time and a
lot of throws to master this."
The thrower uses the rotational shot put method
n which he begins facing the rear of the circle. He
rotates 180 degrees across the circle and releases the
shot.
Berry's Regional silver medal throw of 52' 8.75"
places him sixth in the State qualifiers and was over
a foot longer than his previous best toss. Berry threw
50' 8" at the District meet in Spearman and broke
51-feet in Panhandle at the Regional Qualifier meet.
Berry said he was confident about his chances of

making it to State before the Abilene meet. "I kin-
da felt like I had a chance," he said. "I knew it was
there."
Berry's confidence could stem from his experi-
ence in the shot put. He has competed in the sport
for 8 years and began throwing the shot in the first
grade. "I've been doing it a long time," Berry said.
Bryant said Berry had two goals coming into the
season: throw bigger than his brother did as a sopho-
more and make the Regional meet. "He achieved both
of those goals," Bryant said. "Track teaches charac-
ter and that is exactly what showed in Caleb as he
took each throw."
Senior Wildcats Alex Meraz and Randall
Arbuckle competed with Berry in the shot put
and discus this season and Berry says it has been
a benefit. "Sometimes they catch stuff that even
coach Bryant doesn't see," Berry said. "Sometimes it
helps to have a different perspective."
Berry finished runner-up at the Regional meet to
the 2007 State gold medalist Sean Reagan from Idal-
ou. Reagan qualified third for the State meet with his
throw of 57' 10.25".
Berry believes his Regional competition will help
him in Austin."It's an experience to throw against
that kind of talent," Berry said. "I've never been able
to experience that before."
With the defending gold medalist qualifying third,
Berry knows that the State meet will have some su-
perb throwers. "It's probably one of the tougher years
n quite a while," he said.
Jacob Thormaehlen of Taft qualified first in the
shot put with a distance of 61' 0.50".
Since the Regional meet, Ber-
ry has cut-back on his lifting to
avoid being sore and is throw- a
ng daily. He limits himself Jfl
to 20 full-spin throws.
"You can tire out pretty
quick," he said. "You can
only do so much before
it becomes a negative."
Berry normally lifts
4 times a week during
the year and this year,
he threw the shot peri-
odically in the off-season.
"It's the first time I've ever
done that," he said. "I be
lieve it has helped me
in some areas."
Bryant says
"I be-
Berry has worked hard the last two weeks prepar-
ing for the State meet. "He is a competitor, an athlete
and a great young man," Bryant said. "I look forward
to seeing him compete as one of the best in Texas,
against the best in Texas."
The State meet takes place Saturday, May 9-10 at
Mike A. Myers Statdium in Austin. The shot put is
scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
