Community
Foundation increases
donation amounts to
Bastrop Food Pantry
For the 11th straight
year, Alan Shawn Feinstein,
founder of the Center for
a Hunger Free America at
the University of Rhode
Island, will divide $1 mil-
lion among hunger fight-
ing agencies nationwide,
including one in Bastrop.
The Alan Shawn
Feinstein Foundation will
add money to every dona-
tion made to the Bastrop
County Emergency Food
Pantry between March 1
and April 30. Donated food
will be valued at $1 per
item or pound during these
two months.
The Bastrop County
Emergency Food Pantry's
mission is to serve all
people in Bastrop County
with basic hunger-related
services which include
providing emergency food,
information and referral
counseling and some case
management and support
services for families and
the elderly.
In 2007 the Pantry dis-
tributed 201,526 pounds of
food and assisted 11,015
people with enabling ser-
vices and programs.
The more donations
received in response to the
Feinstein offer from March
1 to April 30, the more
of the Feinstein $1 million
will be added to it, based
on the Pantry's percent-
age of the total reported.

the Feinstein Foundation

New pet registration
law gets first complier
The first dog to comply
with the new Basstrop pet
registration law was Kilo,
the Police Department's
drug dog.
Kilo, accompanied
by his handler. Sergeant
Clint Nagy, was issued
Registration Tag #01
on March 11 by Records
Administrator Donna
Pierce. Wearing this tag
means Kilo has complied
with the city's required
rabies vaccination.
Bastrop City Council
action on Feb. 26 made
it mandatory for all dogs
kept inside the city limits to
have a city-issued license.
To register a dog, visit the
Bastrop Police Department,
City Hall or the Bastrop
County Animal Shelter. Be
sure to bring the dog's cur-
rent rabies vaccination cer-
tification and a valid form
of identification for your-
self. If the pet has been
spayed or neutered, bring
proof of this for a discount
on the registration fee.
For more information
about registering a dog or
other animal control ques-
tions, visit the web site at

"Every year, the state of
Texas removes thousands of
children from their homes
because of abuse or neglect.
These victimized children
are drawn into an overbur-
dened child welfare system
that is hard pressed to address
their individual concerns.
Eventually, they end up in
court. CASA is a nonprofit
partnership that trains and
supports thousands of volun-
teers to work with these chil-
dren as they journey toward
safe, loving, permanent
homes,'" said one organizer.
