Bastrop High School has
started a quarterback club for the
football team and has elected
Gilbert Solis as president of the
organization.
Solis said new athletic director
and head football coach Gerald
Perry has instituted a lot of good
ideas already.
More than 20 families signed
up at the first organizational
meeting for the club March 13.
Persons interested in joining
the club can contact Solis at 512

In College
Senior pitcher Robin Becker
led St. Edward's to its four-game
softball sweep of Lincoln over the
weekend. Becker allowed just
one walk in five innings of work
on Saturday for the no-hitter.
The Hilltoppers kept up their suc-
cess in Game 2 of the Saturday
doubleheader with the 8-0 win.
On Sunday, Becker pitched her
second shutout of the weekend
with a 11-0 win against Lincoln.
Game 2 on Sunday resulted in a
6-1 victory for St. Edward's.
Becker, a Bastrop native, is
15-2 on the season with a 1.82
ERA. She has a perfect 5-0
record in conference play with a
0.00 ERA.
The Hilltoppers will be back in
action Tuesday when they trav-
eled to take on Tarleton State.

Westlake smashes Bears, 12-2
Early triple sets
tone in defeat
to Chaparrals

Westlake standout shortstop
Jordan Etier opened Friday's
game against the Bastrop Bears
with a triple and scored on an
errant throw to set the tone in a
12-2 victory for the Chaparrals in
District 25-5A baseball action.
Westlake pounded out 12 hits
and were also aided by four
Bastrop errors in the five-inning
game called due to the mcercy
rule.
Westlake catcher Webb Evans
had a huge game with a 2-for-4
outing with four RBI.
Eight Chaparrals collected hits
and five had RBI.
Second baseman Brandon
Parsons was 3-for-4 with two
RBI. First baseman Scott Lucado
was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Third
baseman Jesse Rivera had a hit
and two RBI.
Westlake scored four in the
first inning and eight the fourth
frame.
Sophomore Corey Knebel took
the loss. Knebel pitched 3 2/3
innings and gave up nine hits, 11
runs (five earned) with five strike-

Tucker allowed three hits and one
run, which was earned.
Bastrop scored its two runs in
the second.
In the second first baseman
Robert Aleman and catcher Trent
Tate opened with singles.
Knebel doubled to score
Aleman and Cade Staton had a
sacrifice fly to score Tate.
Bastrop left three runners on
base in the first two innings.
Bastrop finished with five hits.
Aleman, Tate and Knebel all were
l-for-2 and Chad Goertz and
Thomas Figueroa were l-for-3.
Figueroa had a double.
Bastrop was scheduled to play
Akins and Anderson this week.
The Akins game was slated for
Tuesday night at Bastrop while
the Anderson game is set for
Thursday at Northwest field in
Austin.
Girls soccer squad to play Reagan
The Bastrop girls soccer team will play San
Antonio Reagan in a bi-district playoff
Tuesday in San Antonio.
The bi-district clash will start at 6 p.m. at
Blossom Stadium. The Lady Bears will play
on the west field of the complex.
"They have 30 players on their team,"
Bastrop coach Angie Watson said. "They are
solid and skilled, but I think we will compete
well against them."
The Lady Bears wrapped up the regular
season on Tuesday against Austin High at
Burger Staduim.
The girls are 8-4-1 in district.
The Bastrop boys played Austin High in its
finale Tuesday.
A Bastrop victory will put the Bears against
San Antonio Churchill in the bi-district round.
If Bastrop loses, they play San Antonio Lee.
The boys are 7-3-3 in district and 10-9-3
overall.

Smithvillc's Tigers will open district
baseball play on Thursday at Bellville.
The Tigers have won eight games this
season to eclipse last year's win total of
six.
Smithville (8-6-1) won four of its first
five games to start the season.
One of the keys for the Tigers success
has been the pitching. The team has solid
starters in Eric Rogers and Keith
Zimmerhanzel. Michael Tuck, Ryan
Teague and Ty Lerche have also been
effective pitchers for coach Ryan Mocrbe's
team.
Anderson knocks off Lady Bears

After ripping through Akins, the
Bastrop Lady Bears fell to Anderson on
Friday in District 25-5A softball play at
Noack Field.
The 5-0 win was Anderson's first in
district action and evened the Lady
Bears at 2-2 in district.
Bastrop was limited to five hits and
were led by third baseman Kristyn
Kleiber with a 2-for-3 outing with a
triple.
Jordan Mundine allowed nine hits
and took the loss. Mundine is 10-8 on
the season.
Anderson pitcher Angie Slaughter
struck out 14 Bastrop batters in improv-
ing her record to 6-8.
Bastrop is 12-12 on the season and
Anderson is 7-9.
Bastrop committed one error.
The Lady Bears were scheduled to
play San Marcos at home on tuesday
and against Bowie at Butler field on
Thursday.
The Lady Bears will be at home for
its final two games of the month March
25 against Austin and March 28 versus
Seguin. The Austin game closes the first
half of district.
