District about some arrange-
ment for the county to take over
its headquarters on Jackson
Street, next door to the Bastrop
County Sheriff's Department,
another agency which is facing
a space shortage.
The appraisal district may
have more space than it current-
ly needs because tax collections
and 9-1-1 addressing activities,
once housed with appraisal
functions, have moved to the
Courthouse
Ladder
need right now, Perry paused
and returned the question —
"How much is a human life
worth?"
Perry said the tallest build-
ing in the county is not more
than the equivalent of three
stories and Bastrop firefighters
can access that height, in most
instances, with their 40-foot
ladder.
He cited the dome of the
Bastrop County courthouse and
buildings at the Hyatt Regency
Lost Pines as examples of some
the higher structures that area
firefighters would encounter.
But if a burning building
— or any of its individual walls
— were in danger of collaps-
ing, then the fire department's
"lean to" 40-foot ladder would
be too dangerous for firefiglit-
Last year county officials
won preliminary approval from
the Bastrop City Council for a
conceptual plan to build new
office space on a block east of
the jail on Jackson Street.
The current approach is to
begin planning now for what
the county may need next as
the area population grows
and brings additional service
demands, said Gavlc Wilhelm,
an assistant to Bastrop County
Judge Ronnie McDonald.

ers to use, Perry said.
An extension ladder from
a truck, such as the one dem-
onstrated by Ferrara, would
be the preferred rescue imple-
ment — besides a hovering
helicopter dangling a rescue
line or seat — because the
elevated ladder would better
protect firefighters from flames
or searing heat.
With the county's burgeon-
ing growth it's also likely
buildings of four stories or
more will be built in the future,
Perry said.
"I would have to make my
case to the city council to get
this ladder truck," Perry said.
"It would have to be a bud-
geted item."
And it could also save lives,
he could have added.
Leak
Stradling said.
Still, as a precautionary measure, police
cordoned off the area and went door-to-
door to ask residents not to turn on any
home switches that might cause a spark.
Stradling said chances "were remote"
that any sort of a spark inside nearby
homes would have ignited the gas outside,
but it was a precautionary measure that is
standard procedure.
Bastrop firefighters Steve Long and
Lance Winkler tried to cap the pipe leak
with a rubber plug. As they worked the
pipe, firefighter Michelle Baker stood by
with a water hose.
"We didn't have a plug that fit the pipe
and gas was still coming out," Stradling
said.
The firefighters backed off the scene
and waited until Center Point Energy per-

sonnel arrived to cap the gas leak, without
mishap.
It was a busy day for firefighters.
A short time later Stradling said
firefighters were dispatched to All Star
Convenience Store on Chestnut Street for
a fuel spill.
"It was a minor gasoline spill, less
than five gallons, which was cleaned up,5'
Stradling said.
