NORFLEET
some people take when explaining something to the
childish mind:
"Why don't you know what that means?"
"No," said I, round-eyed with curiosity. "No, I
don't. I thought mebbe as how you'd learn me?"
This brought results.
He told me of the different units of swindlers in
this country. How they had "done" many men of shrewd
business ability. Their victims included bankers, merchants,
doctors and lawyers and others of high financial
standing, not omitting ministers of the gospel. The
game they played was no childish sport, he said.
WVhile he was dramatically impregnating my absorbent
mind with these thrilling details of daring operation
of the "b-u-n-c-o man," he was joined by two other
uniformed brothers of the law. Not wanting to stop
his voluminous flow of information lest I miss some
definite tip on my gang, I at once included the newcomers
in the family party and exclaimed:
"Howdy, officers! Cap, here has jest been a tellin'
me about these here c-o-n men and their mates the
b-u-n-c-o kids. By Heck!" I cackled in such a way
my own rooster wouldn't have owned me, and jabbed the
inside page with my finger.
"I never heered the like of it. Gol dern their hides,
if they ain't got more nerve'n a pack of coyotes I never
heered none of 'em howl!"
My crass ignorance evidently stamped me as a.
character of no importance, for they ignored me and
fell to talking among themselves.
I still clung to the outside of the group. I gazed
up at them in apparent admiration and respectful awe
for their super-intellect.
"Say, fellows," remarked Cap, like one who casually
imparts a startling piece of news with bored calm. "I
just got a tip, personally, that one of the links in the b,i
con-chain has opened headquarters in the Montezuma
Hotel, in Sanford."
