The others smirked knowingly. They separated,
going different ways and left me standing there.
The train thundered in. I watched the passengers
alight, and meet the loved ones who waited to greet
them. I thought what a happy reception I could give
Furey or Spencer had I the opportunity.
That night I followed the proverbial arrow to Sanford.
All I prayed was that the "Cap" had not given
me a fake lead.
HIowever they all had seemed so totally unaware
of my existence, I felt it was probably a real inside tip.
I leaned back against the Pullman seat. The country
swung past me in straight rows of cultivation.
Orchards and truck farms passed before me in review
like the even ranks of a marching regiment.
I have never seen such a great spread of vegetables
and fruit as lay across the rolling hills. It was the
finest that nature's banquet table afforded. The dark
pungent soil in rich furrows rose between each length
of vegetation.
It was a sight to make you think. A veritable
paradise!
As we drew near Sanford I noticed the celery.
The landscape was a picture in tender green and white
rooted into black earth. Such celery!
It was a garden of Eden. I had heard that the
Sanford celery farms eclipsed any on earth. I believed
it.
And what better mission for me than the pretended
purchase of a celery farm?
From a man seated across the aisle, I learned the
name of the owner of the last farm we passed before
getting into Sanford.
He believed the price of the property was forty
thousand dollars.
Dusk was falling as I alighted from the train.
I walked leisurely in the direction of the celery field.
The air was a little sharp and moist. Deliberately I
