A simple homemade recipe, but it worked like a
"graveyard rabbit's foot" in a darky's pocket.
This little "home edition" of my editing I called
my "Extra," and throughout the three years and ten
months spent in trailing the fugitives I was seldom with.
out a copy of it in my pocket. I must have used a gallon
of paste and worn out several brushes, keeping my
"edition" up to date. No matter how old the notice was.
I pasted it in a current edition of the paper.
I usually read these accounts of criminal activity to
police officers, as I knew they would have more general
information than the average person regarding the movements
of the crooks.
As usual I was again haunting the train tracks.
At the entrance to the waiting room I braced an
important looking blue coat. Perhaps it would be possible
to get some information out of him regarding the
three who had put up bonds and left for parts unknown.
Once at a vaudeville show I heard a comedian say:
"All the world loves a hick!"
As the police apparently owned a great portion of
the globe, I thought perhaps I would get on better with
them if I appeared a little "hickier" than I really was.
I took out my "extra" and went toward this member
of the fraternity. I grinned a grin as wide as the prairie
and looked up in his face with an "Oh, Sir-could-youplease-tell-me"
expression. I said in a high cracked
voice as nearly like the comedian's as I could command:
"Can you please tell me what is meant by this here
b-u-n-c-o men, and this here c-o-n man?"
I spelled the words out slowly, looking into the depths
of the paper.
"I see as how some of them was arrested here.
Three of them! I seen it in this mornin's paper."
I rattled the edition to confirm my statement.
He looked at me with surprise and struck the tone
