ALMOST A CELERY GROWER.
The next day while searching the morning paper
for possible clues or reports of arrested fancy-financiers,
I came upon an article which briefly stated that three
confidence men had been arrested in Tampa. Three of
them!
It might be my own trio, Furey, Spencer and Hamlin!
One lead being as good as another, I left for Tampa.
When I got there I lost no time heading for the
police department. I inquired if the three bunco men
who had been arrested the day before were still there
and what were their names and could I see them.
I got a cold reply that informed me very distinctly
they were "Not there !"
Thev had furnished bond and were out!
I asked if their pictures had been taken and was
told just as coldly that they had not! It certainly was
a refrigerative atmosphere.
I tried to wring some other information from the
dry-cell in the brass buttons, but he evidently had a short
circuit for speech came hard with him. Sometime later
I found out that the three men were not mine. They
had put up bonds, how good, I do not know. Anyway
they never showed up again to claim them.
I had conceived a little scheme of my own which
enabled me to start a conversation with any one, regarding
the operations of the con-man. I carefully cut out
and preserved every item published in the daily papers
which bore on the subject of suspected or arrested confidence
men. Then I would take a current issue of the
daily paper and neatly paste my item over some unimportant
news article in an inside page of the paper.
This method made it possible for me carelessly to
open the newspaper at the proper moment and apparently
