"No !-I--I gotchu," he said nervously.
I could see from the drift that there was no hope
for the Bockermans from this source and that my efforts
were useless. I backed up against the side wall to see
who was at my back and to save a piece of my spine
for future use.
My surprise was no greater than my delight.
"That's all right, stranger. We've seen an' heard
it all."
There stood four men all grinning from ear to ear
and giving my ex-prisoner the IHa! Ha! I distinctly
felt four silent messages of congratulation.
Thankfully, I replaced my gun and left the office.
One of the first things I learned on the range as a
boy was, when you go after an animal, stay with it
until you get it. If vou're aiming to rope a wolf, rope
him or kill him in the effort.
So although the trail of the three Bockerman wolves
had been obscured in the (lust of flight for a time, I decided
to scout around and see if I couldn't find the trail.
Of one thing I was reasonably sure. They probably
knew the police and sheriff's office would not look very
far for them, so they would not use undue caution in
their movements.
I hailed a passing automobile and impressed upon
the driver the necessity for a lift into St. Petersburg.
As soon as I reached town I went to see the old
people. They were overjoyed and trembled with anxiety
to know the result of my visit to town. When I saw
the desolate future of those two old people what couldn't
I have done to those bestial fiends!
Both had recovered their mental equilibrium to some
extent. But most of the time they just sat and waited
patiently for the return of their money.
It was beautiful to see the faith these people had
in the efficacy of prayer to restore their fortune. They
certainly placed much more confidence in the Almighty's
