that the thieves didn't get every damned cent they had
and make 'em walk back to St. Petersburg !"
This nearly toppled me over. For a minute I looked
him in the eve. It was so venomous it didn't seem I
had heard right.
To clear my senses, I asked: "How was that?"
"I said," he repeated viciously, "that people who
let men swindle them out of their money that way are
worse than the swindlers and ought to lose every cent
they ever had! That's what I said !"
This got under my own hide. I lit up like a pan
of powder.
"You dirty scoundrel," I yelled in his face, "I'll
crack you for that!"
I pulled my gun and made for the opening around
the counter.
He saw what I was going to do and hopped off
his stool like a toad from a rock.
We met at the corner of his desk. I had the drop
on him. He had reached for his six shooter, but not
quick enough.
"Drop your gun!" I cried. "You great big, dirty,
good-for-nothing hyena! If you aren't satisfied with the
deal, I can satisfy you and that quick."
I had placed myself directly in line with an open
door which led down a hall to the outside entrance of
the building. My back was to the open door and left it
unprotected from behind. At the same time I realized
this awkward position, I heard footsteps. They were
certainly coming up the passageway. I was in an elegant
position to get popped in the back. I could not turn to
see whose feet they were, being too busy, so called out:
"Don't get excited! I'm not a hi-jacker, trying to
rob your sheriff. He insulted a good old lady and I'm
making him eat his words."
He evidently could see who was coming. "Youyou-misunderstood
what I said," he mumbled, looking
mighty uncomfortable.
