albilitv to recover the little brown bag than they did in
the police department's. In this they showed rare good
judgment.
They never failed to include the thieves who had
robbed them in their prayers.
I hadn't the heart to tell them of my fruitless efforts
at the Sheriff's or of the apparently slim chance of ever
getting the criminals. I said simply that I had investigated
the matter and that so far nothing was known
of the miscreants. I assured them I would not give up
the search and when I heard anything I would let them
know.
Thev again armored me with prayers and I left

-as considerably drier.
On the way to the hotel I stopped in front of a
garage to watch a young red-headed mechanic change a
tire on a big touring car stalled within a few feet of
the garage entrance. Silently, I admired the efficient
and methodical manner in which he handled the unruly
rubber ring. He struck me as being a master of his
trade. \When he finished the job I saw the driver of the
car slip a five dollar hill into his grimy hand. The boy
gave it a careless look and stuffed it into his overalls.
Five dollars is not much in his life I thought to myself.
I watched the powerful motor speed away and remarked
to the boy, "That's some car, isn't it?"
"She's a pretty classy bus all right," was his rejoinder.
I remarked to the boy that tips grew to quite a
size in this warm climate.
"Yas," he sai(l as he picked up his tools, "we get
lots of big tips." He wiped the sweat from his forehead
on his black sleeve. "You know, mister, there's an ole
savin'-'Maanv an honest heart beats under a ragged
coat,' but it looks to me more like it's never an honest
heart ticks under a swell suit of clothes!"
