68 NORFLEET
Some of the faces were drawn and grey looking,
but cunning and shrewd like the silver fox, the trappers'
prize. Others were just rouged blanks. The younger
women had already begun to blot out the lines of (lissipation
with heavy powders and coats of red; smooth
polished skins, like winter apples hardened in the frost.
Beautiful evening wraps fell from white naked shoulders.
Brazen bosoms lifted and fell. Flashing jewels gleamed
and glinted from facile fingers that found a natural
rest in other people's pockets.
I saw none that I knew. I waited in my billet until
the first rosy show of dawn. Then the inner man spoke;
the vision of a golden omelet, a stack of "wheats" with
rich amber syrup spilling down rounded sides; crisp
bacon or sizzling ham. Who could withstand that urge?
I crawled out of my lookout and, like my Airedale,
"Ranger," put my nose to the wind and sped off in the
direction of an inviting little cafe and an early morning
breakfast.
