atmosphere of Stetson or Spencer. He drawled and
noticeably weighed his words.
Ward's face was square, his eyes were a grayish
blue. His hair grew straight up and was close-cropped.
Like many of the noses in the "profession" his, too, inclined
to one side. His eye-brows arched. A loose bag
of flesh hung from his chin. From the front his mouth
was strong, but from the side it slanted sharply into his
weak chin. His shoulders were massive-height five
feet, seven and one-half inches, weight one hundred and
seventy. He appeared the most highly bred of them all.
It was said he came from a prominent and respected
family.
Gerber was the "killer." He was about the same
size and age as Ward. His dark hair was parted and
brushed high across his brow. This threw into relief
two bullet eyes of black. His nose was thick at root
and end; his mouth looked like a slit cut in a stretched
surface and his lips, the taut turned-back edges. In his
eyes I saw the reflection of six dead men.
If I were to be killed this man would be my murderer.
He was the death-dealer of the organization.
After photographing them separately, I passed them
before me in review. They were all there. Then I fell
asleep.
When I awoke and gathered my faculties I looked
into my mind to see if the pictures were still with me.
They were as vivid as in life.
I picked up the telephone from the little table.
"What time is it, please?" I asked the operator.
"Ten-thirty," she answered.
"Ten-thirty?" I questioned. "Why I only came up
here at 10 o'clock, surely I have been here more than
a half hour!"
"I don't know what time you went to your room,
sir, but it's exactly 10:30 A. M."
"Gone again!" I said to myself, and hung up the
receiver. As I did so I cupped my chin thoughtfully in
