me scouting in other directions. I was greeted with the
news that my wife was waiting for me.
To some husbands this news might have conjured
up rolling pins, competently rolled, frying pans with
which to "pan" and flatirons deftly aimed, but to me
it was heaven!
"Has she got that 'million dollar smile'?" I asked
over long distance.
"She sure has," said Captain Gunning.
"Then tell her to wait there for me, and keep it
smiling," I answered.
When I got into Dallas the Captain said she was
at the station waiting. He begged to be allowed to
accompany me just to see the "smile." When we met
her he exclaimed, "A million is too cheap for that welcome,
Norfleet."
And I want to say right here that when I caught
sight of her, I knew if necessary, I could turn the world
upside down. Her confidence, inspiration and faith in
me were beautiful and assuring, but made me all the
more ashamed now that I had permitted my ignorance
to bankrupt the family fortune.
She had heard that I was in the hands of assassins
and probably would never be seen alive again. With
this comforting assurance, she left the ranch and started
out to locate me and had just arrived at Captain Dunning's
office when I called him on the phone.
At the hotel I told her everything down to the
smallest detail.
"Wife," I said, my voice so husky I could scarcely
speak, "I don't know how to look you in the face when
I remember my vow at the altar to 'cherish and protect'
you, and now to realize after all we have gone
through together, I have let these crooks ruin us: have
condemned you to an old age of poverty."
"Nonsense," came in comforting, reassuring tones
from that wonderful woman, while her brave hand patted
my arm.
