his round, smooth face that radiated health and vigor;
his greenish blue eyes and their magnetic pull.
As a crystal gazer peers deep into the mysterious
glass ball, so I peered into these eyes of Stetson.
In their fathomless depths, I saw a serpent coiled.
Never since have I looked into them and not seen the
poisonous fangs. Stetson's mouth sagged at the corners
and from the side view looked like a cod's. He was
always immaculately groomed.
I put his photograph away for the present and
brought Spencer to me. As he approached I noted indelibly
his splendid military carriage. Like an officer
commanding his regiment, he advanced with measured
tread.
Of his features, his crooked nose bent slightly to
the right, was an outstanding mark of identification. His
hair was medium light; eyes blue with the suggestion of
an oriental slant. Keenness, alertness, a wide-awakeness
and up-to-dateness characterized this young man. He
was well under six feet and tipped the scale at one hundred
and fifty pounds. Like his friend Stetson, he was
an athlete and took pride in his fine skin and elastic
muscles. Spencer was thirty-three years of age.
After turning him front and back, right side, left
side, walking him, standing him and running him, I put
him away, noting as the last thing, his smile. His lips
parted and their edges, like thin rose petals rolled back
into his mouth leaving a noncommittal expression upon
his handsome face.

His name conjured up a romantic gambler or soldier
of fortune, a Will O' the Wisp, a whimsical wanderer.
But he was none of these. He was a mule buyer and
ran true to form-medium stature and built like a
burro, glossy black hair streaked with gray, scrutinizing
brown eyes with overhanging eye-lids, flaring eye-brows,
a deep furrowed, weather-beaten neck and a close cropped,
black mustache. He had none of the city-bred
