my hand. What was that I had hold of? It felt like a
stubble field. I walked to the mirror and passed my
fingers across my cheeks, peering as a woman does for
her first grey hair. My beard! It was bristling! I
had shaved not three hours ago.
Surely I was quite mad. Somewhere a padded
cell waited. I picked up the telephone again. I might
as well convince the operator of my condition.
"What day is this, please?" in the sanest voice I.
could command.
"Wednesday."
Wednesday? Then instead of a mere half hour I
had been there twenty-four hours.
I made myself presentable and descended to the
lobby.
For the first time in my experience, I was unaffected
by the beauty of this masterpiece of the architect's creation;
the gleaming white marble stairway, the double
row of massive onyx columns with their gold-touched
capitals, the royal palms softening the severe outline.
The orchestra was playing a tantalizing, popular
waltz.
I had a wild desire to grab one of the pretty young
women and whirl her around the balcony.
Again I searched the crowd for Stetson, Spencer,
Hamlin, Ward and Gerber.
Not a man in the lobby resembled any one of them.
Closing my eyes, I could at will call up one or all of
them in startling vividness.
I knew thev were mine for all time.
From that moment I began the chase, the world my
hunting ground.

and pretended to be deeply interested in the purchase of
it, some other parties came to look at it with the same
