N ORFLEET
up to the desk where we had so often sat to write and
converse.
I said to myself: "Now sit right down there, Stetson,
I want to have a good look at you!" But I could
not see him. I wondered should anyone show me a
photograph of him, could I identify it?
Sickening fear choked me.
Undoubtedly my mind was going. Then my head
would ring:
"Forty-five thousand dollars gone! Ninety thousand
dollars in debt! Fiftv-four years old!"
"MIy God! Mv God!" I cried out.
People stared at me.
A mother drew her child closer to her side.
An overpowering desire to be quiet: to be alone in
stillness came over me.
I do not remember how I reached my room but
somehow I got there. Perspiration beaded my body.
My room, the one in which the plot had been hatcheld
was not large as hotel rooms go, but to me it seemed vast.
I went into the bath room and dipped a towel into
ice water; wrung it out and wrapping it about my head
like a Hindu turban, lay flat on the bed.
The cooling water 'drew the fever from my brain.
I do not know how long it was; time for me had
ceased to record, but slowly normality came back; normality
of pulse and mind.
The frosty band across my brow brought tranquility
and presently I saw Stetson looking me straight in the
eye. We looked at each other for hours it must have
been.
His picture burned into the sensitive film of my
brain; developed itself in the dark room of memory,
never to fade.
I studied his physique from every angle. He stood
six feet and weighed two hundred. His manly, swinging
carriage, his chestnut hair with a line of pink scalp
showing from the middle of his forehead to the crown;
