CAPTAIN MIKE SNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Scholarships
With Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom
Brownwood, Texas
PURPOSE OF FUND
The J. D. McPhaul family has established with the Douglas MacArthur
Academy of Freedom, Brownwood, Texas a scholarship Fund
Honoring Captain Mike Snell, a graduate of West Point and son of
Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Snell of Lamesa, Texas, who at age 25, gave his
life for his Country while participating in the Apache Snow Operation
in the A Shaw Valley, South Vietnam.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
On June 14, 1969 Captain Snell's firm support base came under
heavy attack and the troops became engaged in hand-to-hand combat.
Following the first rounds of enemy attack, several men under his
command were injured and in need of immediate medical assistance.
Captain Snell, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved fifty
meters from his protected bunker through the heavy volume of enemy
mortar fire to assist the wounded. He carried one wounded soldier
back to the safety of the bunker and was going out the bunker door
to retrieve another man when a round impacted at his feet and mortally
wounded him. His sacrifice was directly responsible for saving
the life of the man he had carried to safety.
His death occurred after he had completed one-full year's tour of
duty in South Vietnam. He had returned to the States to visit with
his family and friends in 1968 but his professional training at West
Point (like General MacArthur) made him realize that his efforts could
be used best defending South Vietnam. He asked to be reassigned.
This occurred only a few weeks before his death. His body was laid
to rest in the sod at West Point, N. Y. which he loved so much.
DETERMINATION OF RECIPIENT
It is the desire of the family that a suitable applicant from the Lamesa-Lubbock
area be found, and that the Scholarship Committee will
deal with him favorably; however under no circumstances are they required
to let the geographic location of the applicants keep them from
selecting the most deserving person or persons from receiving this financial
assistance, bearing in mind also, that financial need is not to be
the determining factor.25
