Student Load. In order to encourage extensive reading, independent
thinking, and appropriate individual research, the graduate
student load shall not exceed 16 semester hours during a
given semester or nine hours during the long summer term or
three hours during the short summer term.
The load for students holding full-time positions shall not
exceed three hours per semester.
Statement of Intention to Graduate. Not earlier than one
semester nor later than nine weeks prior to the proposed date of
graduation, every candidate for the Master's degree must file
with the Director of the Graduate Division a Statement of Intention
to Graduate Form. No candidate's name will be placed on
the "Tentative list of Graduates" for any commencement unless
this form has been received by the Director of the Graduate
Division within the time limits specified. Candidates who fail to
graduate at the time designated on the form shall file another
form for any subsequent graduation. Responsibility for filing this
form within the specified time limits rests upon the student.
Time Limit. The student will be expected to complete all
requirements for the degree within five years of the date of initial
matriculation as a graduate student. If he fails to do so, he may
be required to do additional work for the degree.
Thesis. If the student elects to write a thesis, a committee
to direct the thesis will be appointed by the Director of the
Graduate Division in consultation with the student. The main
responsibility of directing the thesis will rest with the student's
major professor, however, the subject, scope, and treatment of
the thesis must be approved by the entire committee. The thesis
must demonstrate the student's capacity for research and independent
thought.
The thesis subject must be filed with the Director of the
Graduate Division not later than the second Monday in January
of the year in which the degree is sought or the third Monday in
March if graduation is to be in July or August.
A mimeographed copy of A Manual for Thesis Writing covering
instructions for preparation of the thesis manuscript may
be secured at the College Book Store.
Two bound copies, either typewritten or printed, shall be
presented to the Director of the Graduate Division for deposit
in the College Library not later than ten days before the date of
graduation. The cost of materials, typing, and binding of the
thesis must be borne by the student.-
