correspondence study, however, will not be accepted in fulfillment
of the requirements for the Master's degree.
Amount and Distribution of Work. There are two plans by
which the Master of Education Degree may be earned at Howard
Payne College. Plan One provides that a candidate may fulfill
requirements for the degree by acceptably completing 30 semester
hours of approved graduate work including a thesis, properly
distributed in the major and minor fields. If the candidate chooses
to omit the thesis, Plan Two provides that he may fulfill requirements
for the degree by satisfactorily completing 36 semester
hours of approved graduate work with the proper distribution in
the major and minor fields.
Major and Minor Fields. A candidate may select his major
in either of the three areas approved for major study in the
Division of Education, provided, he has done as much as 24
semester hours in education at the undergraduate level. He may
choose a minor in any approved field in which he has completed
as much as 18 semester hours at the undergraduate level. If a student
desires, he may divide his minor work between two fields,
in which case, he may select a second minor in any approved
field in which he has completed as much as 12 semester hours.
If Plan One for the degree is followed, the candidate's major
field of specialization must include 18 semester hours including a
thesis valued at six hours. His minor or minors may include 12
semester hours or six semester hours each, respectively. If Plan
Two is followed, the candidate must present a minimum of 18
semester hours in his major field of specialization including Education
521 and Education 523 and a maximum of 18 semester
hours in his minor or minor fields, with not fewer than six hours
in any field.
Level of Courses. The candidate may submit for credit only
that work which is done in upper level and graduate (300, 400,
and 500) courses. At least one-half of the work presented for
the degree must be from those courses (500 series) designated as
exclusively for graduate students.
Quality of Work. Where a graduate student is enrolled in
a class with undergraduate students, he will be expected to do
research projects and independent thinking not normally required
of the undergraduate students, and otherwise demonstrate a higher
quality of work in the course than is expected of the undergraduate
members of the class. No credit will be granted toward
the Master's degree in any course unless the grade for the course
is "B" or better.62
