BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
ENDOWMENTS
The late Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Walker gave during their lives a
half million dollars to Howard Payne College for buildings,
equipment and endowment. Under the will of Mr. Walker a trust
fund of one million dollars for endowment was created.
The Hardin Trust. Mr. and Mrs. John G. Hardin of Burkburnett
created the Hardin Trust with assets of nearly two million
dollars. Howard Payne College participated in the trust to
the extent of $305,000.00.
A. L. Wasson Trust. Mr. A. L. Wasson of Big Spring has
created a large trust fund with the Baptist General Convention
of Texas. Howard Payne College participates in the distribution
of this fund to a number of Baptist institutions and causes.
Dr. Ben Shelton has given $3,000 for endowment.
Mrs. P. S. Ramseur of Paris has given $5,000 for endowment
of the Bible Department.
Mrs. Kate Sanders of Coleman, gave $1,000 for the endowment
of the Bible Department.
The Rev. A. Wood of Blanket made a gift of $150 toward
endowment. This was the first gift to endowment.
Mr. W. S. Wescott made a bequest of $8,500 to endowment.
Citizens of Brownwood have subscribed $70,000 toward the
endowment of the College.
Dr. and Mrs. H. L. Locker and Family have given to Howard
Payne College for endowment of the Daniel Baker College
of Agriculture and Useful Arts the Main Hotel on Main Avenue.
The campaign for endowment will be continued until the
institution has adequate support.
PRIZES
Vinson Ministerial Award. Mr. Truett Vinson and Miss Lena
Vinson offer annually a Biblical Commentary to the ordained
Baptist minister having the highest scholastic standing of all ordained
Baptist ministers of the senior class. To be eligible for the
award the minister must have an average of B on the regular required
course per semester, and must be a member of the senior
class. The award will be made on commencement day in May of
each year.32
