5340. Theory of Mass Communication.
An investigation of the characteristics of mass communication media, and ways to use them for
maximum effectiveness. Attention is given to contemporary mass communication models,
major theories of mass communication, and research.
5351. Magazine Production.
Develop skills in producing magazines, including application of the principles of typography,
photography, layout, and production. Prerequisities: Comm. 3341, 3342, 3361 or permission of
instructor.
5360. Television Production-Direction.
Direction and production of telelvision programs. Responsibilities of the director and program
problems are studied with experience in production.
5362. Radio and Television Writing.
Music continuity, commercials, and continuity for special broadcasts. An introduction to radio
drama and radio documentary.
5364. Religious Broadcasting.
Study of religious radio and television productions with emphasis on media characteristics,
purposes, history, audiences, and foreign broadcasting.
5369. Introduction to Linguistics.
The science of language with emphasis varying with the needs and aims of the classes. (Same as
Bible M 5369 and Eng. 5369.)
5376. Public Relations.
Modern concepts of public relations, including ways businesses and institutions interpret
themselves to society by communicating their messages to their various publics. (Same as B.A.
5376).
5377. Effects of Mass Communication.
A consideration of the impact of the mass media upon our social, political, and economic activities
in the nation. Special attention is given to the philosophical and empirical evidence of the
capabilities and the limitations of the mass media. (Prerequisite: Com. 5340).
5379. Religious Mass Communication Theory.
Theoretic analysis of religious mass communication with emphasis on the application of
contemporary theories and principles of communication. Prerequisite: Com. 5340 or permission
of instructor.
5385. Organizational Communication.
Study of the structure and function of communication within formal organizations, with
emphasis on concepts and principles needed for effective management of organizational communication
processes. Prerequisite: Corn. 5340 or permission of instructor.
5388. Communication Law.
Freedom and responsibility of print and broadcast media under the law. First Amendment
principles and legal philosophy affecting the mass media. Prerequisites: Com. 2323, 2324 or
equivalent.
5389. Teaching and Advising Journalism in High School.
A consideration of basic journalistic skills and administrative abilities needed by secondary
school publications advisors and teachers of journalism.
5390. Advanced Advertising.
The study of advanced theoretical and practical aspects of advertising, with special emphasis
on budgeting, financial management, media buying and copywriting. Prerequisite: Com. 3378 or
equivalent.
6300. Guided Study.
Independent study in one of three areas: advertising-public relations, news-editorial, or radiotelevision.
Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.
