Elementary Teacher-One minor of 12 semester hours or a composite minor (5000 or 6000
courses) in art, biology, chemistry, communication-speech, English, French, German, history,
mathematics, music, physics, physical education, psychology, Spanish, or approved courses.
Departmental Requirements for the
Master of Education Degree
Prerequisite:
Bachelor of Science degree or the equivalent.
Total Requirement:
The student must earn at least 36 semester hours of graduate credit, at least half of which
must be in courses open only to graduate students.
A minimum of 12 semester hours is required in education courses relating to the student's
principal field of study or area of educational activity.
Students pursuing the School Counselor Certificate must complete the required counselor
preparation sequence of 30 hours with an additional six hours of electives.
Professional Certification Requirements:
Attention is called to the fact that meeting the requirements for a master's degree in
education does not necessarily qualify the student for professional certification. Each student's
professional certification program must be planned to meet his individual needs and to insure
professional competence in his area of professional activity. If the student's undergraduate
preparation is inadequate, the professional certificate requirements may exceed the minimum
requirements for the degree.
In order to assist in the planning of graduate programs in education in the various areas of
professional activity, the following outlines are suggested. It should be understood, however,
that certification requirements are subject to change between publications of the graduate
catalog.
