Department of Communication
Head of Department: Edwin H. Enzor, Jr.
The courses of the Communication Department are grouped into four divisions:
oral communication, drama, communication disorders, and mass communication.
Courses may be selected from one of these areas for a major leading to the Master of
Arts Degree.
Departmental Requirements for the Degree
Prerequisites:
A Bachelor of Arts Degree or the equivalent. Certain leveling courses are required
prior to admission if the student does not have a communication major in his undergraduate
work.
Departmental Procedures and Student Options:
1. At the beginning of the master's program, the candidate will be assigned a
graduate committee (minimum of three) by the department chairman upon
recommendation of the student's graduate advisor.
2. After he has completed between twelve and eighteen semester hours in
approved graduate courses, the student will take a written and oral evaluative
examination. This examination will serve as a basis for planning the balance of
the candidate's program.
3. The students will be given three options:
a. A 30-semester-hour program, which includes a six-hour formal thesis.
b. A 30-semester-hour program, which includes a formal project(s) equivalent
in time and effort to the traditional thesis. This may consist of two threehour
projects or one six-hour project, reported in a manner satisfactory to
his graduate committee.
c. A 36-semester-hour program, which requires 36 semester hours of course
work. These courses will be specified by the graduate committee under
whom the student is working. One-half of the program must be done in
6000-level courses.
4. After the completion of all credit requirements, the student will take a final oral
examination.
Major:
For a major, a minimum of 24 semester hours must be completed in one division of the
Department of Communication. One of the departmental fields listed above may be selected
as an area of concentration but courses must be included from at least two other departmental
fields.
Minor:
The hours for the minor will be approved by the graduate advisor of the division chosen
for a major.
Foreign Language:
A reasonable proficiency in an acceptable foreign language is required. The student may
be allowed to substitute an acceptable number of cognate tool courses to meet this requirement
by application to his graduate committee. These courses will be taken in addition to
the courses required for the major.Department of Communication 51
