There is a great deal of opportunity for electives in the order of
the work. English, Mathematics (through Algebra and Plane Geome,try),
Bible are required each year the student is in the Academy. The
other required units must be taken, and enough electives to make fifteen
in all, but no definite year is set during which the work is to be
done.

BIBLE
Course 1.-This course covers the entire Bible by periods. The
purpose is to familiarize the students thoroughly with the different
periods of Bible history and the chief characters connected with each
period. The book must be properly divided if it is to be thoroughly
understood. We consider this one of our most practical and valuable
courses.
Course 2.-The Life of Christ is studied from the four Gospels in
chronological order.
Course 3. Acts of the Apostles and a historic view of the epistles
of Paul in their time order; the life of Paul; a practical study of the
other epistles and of Revelations.
Course 4.-Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy,
Joshua, Judges, Ruth and Job. This course is a careful detailed study
of the books included.
ENGLISH
Course 1.-Payne's Learn to Spell, Kittredge and Farley's Advanced
English Grammar, and Herrick and Damon's New Composition
and Rhetoric are all begun this year. Twenty-four short themes are
written and revised by the student. Class-room study: Halleck and
Barbour's Readings from Literature, Longfellow's Courtship of Miles
Standish, Franklin's Autobiography, Washington's Farewell Address,
Whittier's Snowbound, Stevenson's Treasure Island. Two selections
memorized each month. At least six books, including Tom Brown's
Schooldays, must be read from the eighth grade list of books as parallel
reading. Students are advised to do this reading in the preceding
Summer vacation.
Course 2.-Payne's Learn to Spell, Kittredge and Farley's Advanced
English Grammar, and Herrick and Damon's Rhetoric are all
continued this year. Twenty short themes and four longer ones.
Class-room study: Payne's Southern Literary Readings, George Eliot's
Silas Marner, Selections from Stevenson, Tennyson's Idyls of the
King and other Poems. Two selections memorized each month. Six
books, including Homer's Odyssey, from the ninth grade list of books,
as parallel reading. Students are advised to do this reading in the
preceding Summer vacation.
Course 3.-Payne's Learn to Spell continued. Both Kittredge and
Farley's Advanced English Grammar and Herrick and Damon's
Rhetoric completed this year.
Eighteen short themes and four long ones.
Long's American Literature in connection with Payne's Readings in
American Literature.
