WILI) GAME DINNER SHOWMANSHIP WINNERS -The annual Starr County Fair
Association Wiid (>amc Dinner featured a Showmanship Contest for cooking teams.
Event Chairman Leonel "Nene" Lopez is shown at right congratulating
representatives of the winning teams. They are, l-r, H.E.B., third place; Los
Compadres, second place; and Alvarez & Associates, first place. Ruben Villarreal
and Ruben Saenz, second and third from left respectively, served on Lopez's
committee for the event, which was termed a success by the Fair Association board.

Joya tournament champions
Anissa Lynette Falcon, center, was crowned Preteen Princess for the 1997 Starr
County Fair at Sunday night's annual Fair Pageant in Rio Grande City. Standing at
her left are Maribel Villarreal, first runnerup; and Graciela Ochoa, second runnerup.
Standing at the right of the new Princess are Rosalinda Moralez, third runnerup; and
Tiffany Paige Smedley, fourth runnerup.

Fastpitch Softball team won their
sccond consecutive La Joya
Tournament Championship on
Saturday, March 1.
The Rio team went undefeated to
win the championship title.

These 14 players were able to
win the title from a bracket
consisting of Valley teams from
McHi, Memorial, Rowe, La Joya
and Mission. Rio received a bye in
the first round, beat McHi 17-2 in
the second round and beat Memorial
13-6 in the championship game.
The RGC team previously beat
PSJA High 16-5 on Feb. 13, beat
PSJA North 6-1 on Feb. 14 and
beat Weslaco 11-6 on Feb. 18. This
same team was scheduled to start
their district schedule on Monday,
March 3.

5-K run scheduled
during County Fair
The Starr County Fair
Association will once again include
the 5 K Kun as part of the busy
schedule of events for the fair. The
run will be held on Saturday, March
8, according to Chairman Aristco
Klein.
Registration forms are available
in advance at Starr Banking Center
from Klein or Cesar Gonzalez.
I ale registration will last until 8:30
on Saturday morning before the
event begins at 9:00 a.m. near
Zarsky west of Rio Grande City.
The run will end at the Fort
Ringgold campus front gate.
Male and female entrants will be'
divided into the following age
categories: 12 and under, 13-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60
and over. The entry fee of $10.00
will include a t-shirt for the first 75
entries. First and second place
trophies in each category will be
presented, plus overall men and
women winners.
When a cookbook tells you to
