Roma High plans
Fair ecumenical
student trip to Europe service set for Sunday
Plans are underway for a student
trip to Europe for the summer of
1997. It is being organized by Mr.
Steven Cairns, a Social Studies
teacher at Roma High School.
This is a great opportunity for
member of this community to see
different cultures and some of the
world's most spectacular sites.
Participants will depart around
July 15th for Munich, Germany.
While there they will tour the
famed Hofbraubaus and BMW car
museum. Austria will be the next
destination, with stops in Salzburg
and Innsbruck. Sites of interest
there include Mozart's home, a
palace and royal garden, and a
cathedral - not to mention traveling
by bus through the beautiful snow-
capped Alps mountains.
The bulk of the trip will be spent
in Italy. Piazza San Marco, a
palace, and a glass factory will be
toured in Venice, and participants
will have the opportunity lo lake a
trip through the canals in a
gondola!
The ancient ruins of Rome,
including the Colosseum that was
the site of gladiatorial contests, are
included in the itinerary. While in
Rome the group will also visit the
Vatican to visit Catholicism;'s
center: St. Peter's Basilica and the
Sistine Chapel (home to the
famous ceiling frescoes painted by
Michelangelo).
The next stop will be the
Renaissance capital of Florence,
once the home of Michelangelo.
Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and
other. A leather factory, some
famous churches, and the outdoor
market will be just a few of the
must-see places in Florence.
Rounding got the tour of Italian
cities will be a brief stop in Pica to
see the Leaning tower. The final
stop will be the French Riviera,
playground to some of the world's
richest people, on Europe's
Mediterranean coast. Nice and
Monaco will be our destinations
there. Participants will return
around July 24.
This trip offers a rare opportunity
for member of our community to
explore an area that is full of
history. The shopping, food, and
different culture and lifestyles of
Europe should be fascinating, and
memories are sure to last a lifetime.
Mr. Cairns is looking to enlarge
the group that has already pledged
to go.
Anyone - student or adult - who
is interested in participating in this
trip can get more information and a
application form by calling Mr.
Cairns at 487-6288. The deadline

Mexican-American War was written

Commission.
The Mexican-American War was
in full swing 150 years ago.
Therefore it is appropriate for us to
reflect upon what Mexico calls the
American Invasion.
Camargo in the fall of 1846 was
host to 15,000 troops, both regular
Army and militia from many states.
This was the largest concentration
of troops up to that time for U.S.
forces. Disease would claim 1500
troops as they were camped south
of town on both sides of the Rio
San Juan.
Monterrey was besieged and
captured during September 1846.
February 1847 saw General Zachary
Taylor leading his army back to
Camargo. General Antonio Lopez
de Santa Anna meanwhile was
force-marching a large army north
to catch Taylor. They would meet
at Buena Vista on Feb. 22, 1847.
President Polk was a Democrat
while Generals Taylor and Scott
were Whigs. Because of future

another party Polk did his best to
hamper Scott.
After victories at Palo Alto and
Resaca de la Palma in May 1846
and a promotion to general, Taylor
was feared more. Polk started to
reassign units from Taylor to Scott,
thereby reducing Taylor's forces.
Taylor was ordered to hold the
border region and not to invade
Mexico further.
The whole country argued with
the decisions made just as it did in
the future with Vietnam. Everyone
knew that the President was
meddling in the execution of the
war. Many citizens felt that
Taylor's army was being used as a
feint to draw forces away from
Scott's invasion force at Veracruz.
It was conceded that Taylor would
be sacrificed. However, events
surprised everyone by Taylor being
the victor at Buena Vista. The
victory eventually led Taylor to
become the 12th president of the
United States.
As before in all the previous
battles, one of the deciding factors
was the artillery trained by Samuel
Ringgold in the years preceding the
war.
