Concern Voiced About
Dog Bite Epidemic
Concern is being expressed that
the recent rash of dog bites is
posing a growing safety and health
problem to the residents of Starr
County, with the problem being
especially acute in Rio Grande
City.
Sheriff Gene Falcon said Tues
day, "In the past three months, we
have had 23 reported dog bites,
some of them severe. Two weeks
ago, a child was bitten by a dog
and had to have numerous stitches
in her head. She could have been
killed."
Falcon said that 85 percent of the
reported dog bites have been in the
Rio Grande City vicinity The
sheriff worried, "That's a lot of dog
bites in three months. How many
dog bites were not reported?. The
biggest percentage are happening
in populated areas."
He insisted, "We definitely need
some kind of county ordinance. I
spoke with Dr Margo fa local
veterinarian), and he's very willing
to help. We also have the help of
the Health Department."
F'alcon suggested, "We need to
get all the stray dogs vaccinated,
and somehow contained within
their premises...People need to
take the initiative to contain dogs
within their premises. We need a
little more attention to safety...A
dog pound seems to be needed."
Sheriff Falcon said that the
threat of attacks by dogs is
especially serious to numerous
students that walk to and from
school.
He stressed, "The commissioners
are aware of the problem, and are
concerned about the problem. They
had not been aware of many dog
bites there had been "
Falcon concluded, 1 urge people
to have dogs. They're wonderful
protecting the home, but they need
..o be contained within the pre-
mises. .We urge people to report
dog bites."
Local veterinarian Dr Roberto S.
Margo said, "The county does have
a rabies ordinance; it all needs to
be revised, updated, and enforced.
The need for a dog pound is most
definitely there "
Margo indicated that the fre-
quency of dog bites in the past few
months has been considerably
greater than normal. He worried,
"The vast majority of these dogs
are not even vaccinated "
