3 Students
Graduate From
Block Tax Course
Graduation time arrives at an
odd time of the year for normal
schooling.
However, for the tax course, it is
right on schedule. Dario A. Guerra,
local H&R Block franchise owner,
has a local group of three students
that graduated on Dec. 8.
Those receiving their graduation
certificates from the 13-week
course included Bias Chapa, Jr.,
Cynthia Alaniz, and Adriana
Leticia Rodriguez.
The tax course concentrated on
tax preparation including tax
theory and tax law to include the
new tax changes.
GTE Offering Reduced
Ph one Installation
Certain individuals in areas
served by General Telephone in
Texas who presently do not have
telephone service may be eligible
for reduced telephone installation
charges as part of a national
program being piloted in Texas to
expand the availability of telephone
service.
E.L. "Buddy" Langley, president
of General Telephone, said in-
stallation fees for eligible partici-
pants will be reduced by a
maximum of $30 with the balance
payable without interest in four
equal monthly payments.
Texas is one of the four states in
which the program, called Link Up
America, is being piloted. The
telephone company official said the
goal is to preserve and promote
telephone service for low income
households and to get those Ameri-
cans who currently do not have
telephone service onto the tele-
phone network
The concept of Link Up America
was proposed earlier this year by
the Federal-State Joint Board to
the Federal Communications
Commission The FCC adopted the
program in April.
The program will be funded
through interstate telephone reve-
nues
Qualifications for the program is
based on income level and eligibili-
ty for social service assistance
programs In general, an individual
or household will qualify if income
is below the federal poverty level,
and the individual has not had
telephone service for at least three
nonths
Qualified individuals who are
interested in more details or who
might want to sign up for the
program are asked to contact the
Link Up America representative in
the General Telephone business
office
The program is limited to re-
duced installation charges and does
not include any assistance with
monthly phone charges
