Rattlers Split Four Basketball Games
The Rio Grande City Rattlers
broke even in the four basketball
games they played last week.
The Rattlers began their week
last Tuesday night at home by
pounding Mercedes 69-37. The Rat-
tlers jumped out to a 16-5 lead by
the end of the first period, led 36-19
by halftime, and held a 53-25
advantage by the end of three
quarters
The Rattlers had a good shooting
night, connecting on 30 of 62. or 49
percent, of their field goal at-
tempts. Rio was 0 for 1 from
three-point range.
Rattler Coach Ricardo Lopez
commented, "We had worked hard
since the loss to Pace. The kids
were real hungry for a victory. We
needed one of these type games."
Lopez added, "We had some good
fast breaks; we shot well as a
team. We hit a good percentage of
inside shots, with a few outside
shots We cut down on our
turnovers."
Lopez noted that the Tigers cut
the lead to 10 points a couple of
minutes into the third quarter. He
said, "After that, we called a time
out and started clicking again."
Dave Jones and Enrique Garcia
paced the Rattlers with 17 points
each, and Horacio Flores added 16.
Jay Gonzalez led the Tigers with 17
points. Armando Lopez led the
Rattlers in rebounds with nine, and
Enrique Garcia added seven.
The Rattlers were 9 of 15 from
the free throw line, while the
Tigers were 12 of 20 from the
charity stripe The Rattlers com-
mitted 16 turnovers for the game.
In their first game of the
Edinburg tournament on Thursday
against San Benito, the Rattlers
edged San Benito 41-39. Lopez
commented, "It seemed like no one
wanted to win the game...It was a
very sluggish game both ways. The
ball just wasn't going in, and we
weren't getting many shots. We're
happy that we ended up winning."
San Benito scored the first eight
points of the game, only to see Rio
score eight unanswered points. The
Rattlers held a five-point lead in
the fourth period, but San Benito
took a two-point edge in the final
minute.
Rio's Enrique Garcia then scored
the tying basket on an inside shot
with 30 seconds left. After San
Benito missed a shot with 17
seconds left, the Rattlers took the
ball downcourt. Horacio Flores
attempted to connect from three-
point range and missed, but Dave
Jones rebounded and tipped the
ball in for the game-winning
basket.
The Rattlers were 16 of 46 from
the field, including 2 for 11 from
three-point range. The Rattlers
were 6 of 11 from the foul line,
while San Benito was 8 for 15.
San Benito led 11-7 after one
period, but Rio took a 20-19 lead
into intermission. Both teams were
ice cold in the third period, scoring
only six points each.
Dave Jones was the Rattler
scoring leader with 15 points,
including one three-point basket.
Enrique Garcia scored 11 points,
and Joe Whatley added seven,
including one three-pointer. T.
Olivarez was the San Benito
scoring leader with 14 points. Jones
was also the leading Rio rebounder
with nine boards.
On Friday, the Rattlers were
defeated 56-45 by Weslaco. The

Panthers led 16-14 after one
quarter, 25-22 at halftime, and 40-28
after three periods.
Lopez commented, "In the third
quarter, Weslaco came out and
played good pressure defense and
forced us into some turnovers...We
made too many mistakes to open
the second half. They hurt us inside
with their height advantage." He
also pointed to the fact that Rio
only scored six baskets in all the
second half.
Lopez noted tha.. Weslaco scored
the first six points of the game, but
the Rattlers came right back to tie
the score and kept the game close
throughout the first half In the
fourth quarter, Rio cut the Panther
lead to eight, and Lopez said that
"we had some opportunities to cut
it to six, but we missed some
baskets."
The Rattlers were 15 of 43 from
the field, including 0 for 1 from
three-point range. Rio did well
from the foul line, hitting 15 of 20,
while Weslaco was only 8 for 17.
The Rattlers were severely ham-
pered by 26 turnovers.
Dave Jones and Horacio Flores
paced Rio in scoring with nine
points each and Ricardo Gutierrez
added eight. Billy Pemelton, a
6-foot, 7-inch center, led the Pan-
thers with 20 points. Gutierrez was
the leading Rattler rebounder with
six boards.
On Saturday, still in the Edin-
burg tournament, the Rattlers were
thrashed 82-46 by Brownsville
Hanna. Hanria led 24 8 after one
period, 40-26 at halftime, and 60-35
after three periods
Lopez evaluated the game this
way, "This is the worst game
we've played this year. We put
them on the line too much, and
couldn't buy a basket. The kids
were trying hard, but they pressed
too much. They (Hanna) played
well and shot real well. They shot
close to 55 percent, if not better."
Lopez also pointed to the fact
that the Rattlers were bedeviled by
27 turnovers.
The Rattlers were 14 of 18 from
the free throw line, but the Eagles
hit 27 of their 38 chanty shots.
Three Rattler players, Dave Jones,
Horacio Flores, and Armando
Lopez, fouled out of the game.
The Rattlers only shot 30 percent,
or 16 of 53, from the field, including
0 for 5 from three-point range.
Dave Jones paced the Rattlers
with 16 points, and Ricardo
Gutierrez added 12. T. Ramos was
the leading Eagle scorer with 23
points, and H. Galvan added 15.
After playing La Joya at home
Tuesday night, the Rattlers, now
2-6 on the season, will play in the
Weslaco tournament beginning
Friday night. Their first game will
be against Raymondville. On
Tuesday night, Dec. 15, the Rat-
tlers will tangle with the Ed-
couch-Elsa Yellowjackets on the
road.
The Roma Gladiator basketball
team had a banner week last week,
winning all four of their games and
winning the championship of the
Sharyland tournament.
On Saturday, the Gladiators won
the tournament by defeating
Zapata in the final 73-63 Roma
jumped off to a 16-point lead by
halftime, but saw the Hawks cut
the margin to five, at 51-46, by the
end of the third quarter. The
Hawks were able to cut the lead to
one at one point in the third stanza
About the final, Roma Coach
Jesus "Chuy" Guerra, Jr., com-
mented, "We started off fast. When
Zapata made a run at us, we
responded and took control of the
game midway through the fourth
quarter."
After the tournament, Roma
guard Manuel Alvarez was named
the tournament Most Valuable
Player, and center Leonel Perez
and guard Omar Canales were also
named to the All-Tournament
team.
Guerra noted that Zapata's Luis
Alaniz hit four shots from three
point range in the third quarter to
start the Hawks on the comeback
trail In the second half, Zapata hit
seven shots from three-point range.
But in the fourth quarter, the
Gladiators, noted Guerra, "hit
some clutch baskets to hold on to
the lead. We never lost the lead. It
was a combination of inside and
outside shots."
The Gladiators jumped out to an
18-8 advantage by the end of the
first quarter and led 38-22 at
halftime.
Guerra credited Roma's hot start
to the fact that "we played a
combination defense. We hit a high
percentage of our shots in the first
half. We hit a lot of outside shots,
especially by Omar Canales and
Manuel Alvarez."
The Roma scoring went as
follows: Manuel Alvarez, 17; Omar
Canales, 17; Leonel Perez, 14;
Bobby Garcia. 12; Frankie Guerra,
7; Noel Ramirez, 4; Ervay
Gonzalez, 2 Guard Luis Alaniz led
Zapata in scoring with 24 points,
and Andy McGee contributed 15
points.
Roma was only 10 of 20 from the
free throw line, while the Hawks
sank nine of their 14 attempts from
the chanty stripe Guerra indicated
that the Gladiators shot about 45
percent from the field, and turned
the ball over 13 times.
In their first game of the week,
Roma stunned Me Allen High 81-78
on the road last Tuesday night.
Guerra said, "It was a good game.
We played hard all game. We were
down by three points with about
one minute to play, and our press
caused some turnovers and we hit
some crucial free throws.
In the game's last minute, Leone!
Perez got free inside, and hit a
three-point play to give Roma the
lead for good. Later, he hit a
crucial free throw to ice the game.
The game was tied at 15 after
one period, but the Gladiators

raced to a 41-31 halftime advan-
tage. The Bulldogs rallied in the
third quarter to cut the deficit to
60-58.
Guerra commented, "It was a
fast-paced game. Our press played
a big factor, as did our ability to
keep our turnovers down. We
showed we could come back.
McAllen's greatest weapon was the
shooting of Ruben Garza around
the key."
The Gladiators were 21 of 34 in
free throw shooting, while the
Bulldogs hit 13 of 17 foul shots.
Guerra indicated that the Gladiator
shooting percentage against
McAllen High averaged in the high
40's.
Roma's scoring went as follows:
Leonel Perez, 31; Manuel Alvarez,
20; Omar Canales, 14; Bobby
Garcia, 6; Noel Ramirez, 4; Ervay
Gonzalez, 4; Isaac Garza, 2.

Bulldogs with 28 points, and guard
Eric Steinbrunner added 14
In their first game of the
Sharyland Tournament, on Thurs-
day, the Gladiators defeated
Brownsville Villa Maria 95-66.
After the first quarter, Roma led
25-10, and held a 51-35 advantage at
intermission Roma's biggest first
half lead was 20 points. Villa Maria
was able to cut slightly into
Roma's lead in the third quarter,
but the Gladiators still led 67-55
after three periods.
Guerra said the key to the fast
start was "our defense and allow-
ing just one shot at the basket. We
did a good job of defense and
rebounding."
Of Villa Maria's second half
charge, which could come no closer
than 12 points, the Gladiator coach
said, "The game was in the tempo
we wanted it We hit a little dry
spot in the third quarter, but we
picked up our intensity in the
fourth quarter and got a lot of easy
layups "
Guerra added, "Our fast break
was the leading weapon. Once we
got into a running game, that was
in our favor. We got a lot of
layups."
The Gladiators did well from the
free throw line, hitting 21 of 26
attempts. Villa Maria was 10 of 18
from the foul line. Guerra said,
"We hit a little over 50 percent
from the field."
Roma's scoring went as follows:
Leonel Perez, 28; Manuel Alvarez,
24; Omar Canales, 11; Isaac Garza,
10; Ervay Gonzalez, 7; Noel
Ramirez, 6; Bobby Garcia, 3;
Frankie Guerra, 2.
For Villa Maria, Gene Hernandez
was the scoring pacesetter with 28
points, while Aldo Solis added 19.
In their next game, on Saturday
against San Perlita, the Gladiators
won 72-57. They led 21-12 after one
quarter, 40-25 at halftime. and 52-31
after three quarters. Their lead
swelled as high as 25 points in the
fourth quarter.
Guerra said, "We played fairly
well. We contained their fast break
We got a fairly comfortable lead,
and took it from there. The tempo
of the game was to our advantage.
We got some easy baskets off our
fast break."
The Gladiators were seven of 12
from the free throw line, while San
Perlita hit five of their six
opportunities.
The Roma scoring was as
follows: Omar Canales, 27; Manuel
Alvarez, 11; Leonel Perez, 8;
Ervay Gonzalez, 6; Gilberto Ren-
teria, 4; Noel Ramirez, 4; Isaac
Garza, 4; Frankie Guerra, 2;
Martin Canales, 2;Joey Gonzalez,2
E^ddie Ocaza paced San Perlita
with 21 points, and Steven Johnson
added 18.
The Gladiators then went on to
wrap up the tournament champion-
ship with a 73-63 victory over
Zapata in the final later on
Saturday.
The Gladiators' four victories
last week extended their season
