The Roma Parent Advisory
Council held i'.-i regular meeting
recently at the -iign School Science
Lecture Room.
Up for discussion was the
fundraiser for scholarships and the
update on compliance monitoring
by Region One. Also discussed was
the importance of using English at
home and viewing T V. programs
in English so that the student can
get used to using more English at
school and at home.
Parents agreed on the im-
portance of learning English in
order that students can make
better grades in school.
After the meeting, the superin-
tendent, principals, and ad-
ministrators, together with all
council members enjoyed the tradi-
tional Thanksgiving dinner at the

Figueroa, in response to ques-
tions, said that "the completion of
North Grammar (the new cafete-
ria) is hard to figure, maybe four
or five months."
Figueroa indicated that the pro-
posal for the new location of the
Grulla Elementary cafeteria
"should be ready next week. The
contractor said there would be a
savings."
Figueroa later indicated that
after the bid opening, it was
determined that the cafeteria loca-
tion would be an area close to the
football field.
Figueroa discussed the progress
of the work on the athletic
fieldhouse, and suggested that the
main need is for a paint job. He
said, "If it's painted a light color,
you should get seven to 10 years
life."
Figueroa suggested that "you
need another staircase from the
second floor down on the other
side. Carrera commented, "1 think
our own people can do the stairs."
"Nene" Lopez suggested, "Bring
the specs, and let us look at it."
At the end of the meeting, when
the subject of bus shelters came
up, Carrera said, "I'd like to
provide some help to people who
want these shelters in the commu-
nity. Let's work with the communi-
ties involved."
Eusebio Saenz, chairman of the
Ranchos Unidos Citizens For Bet-
ter Government, said, "We're
flexible; we don't expect the board
to provide everything, but we need
some help. We're looking at seven
sites in our area (La Victoria-La
Grulla-La Casita); we could cut
down to five."
"Nene" Lopez asked, "How
many would we have to build in
other areas?" Saenz said, "I'm
representing my particular com-
munity. You're elected to help kids
everywhere. We're a new organiza-
tion; we're willing to donate some
labor."
Trustee Jaime Ramirez sug-
gested, "Why don't we start wi^
three, and let the administratis
monitor this?" Falcon asked,
"Where are we going to put them,
and what about liability?"
After some more discussions, a
consensus was reached that Saenz
and his group would work on a plan
for location of shelters in the area
with Business Manager Romeo
Lopez. Saenz noted that the plan is
to start off with four shelters for
students to take cover from i.^
clement weather while waiting for
the bus.
After some discussion, the trust-
ees agreed to the recommendation
of the high school administration to
hold this year's junior/senior prom
at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Carrera, Zarate and Falcon
expressed concern that the school's
ability to exercise control would be
compromised by moving to a
different location.
Falcon said, "My gut feeling is
that we shouldn't allow this,"
Principal Ruben Saenz said, "We
will have six policemen on the
perimeter of the building I
wouldn't recommend this without
adequate security...The parents
involved with the junior boosters
recommended this."
Gonzalez expressed support for
the idea, suggesting lh?i
misbehavior by students coiM
happen just as easily on school
property. Zarate expressed
particular concern about the effect
on neighborhood traffic, and prob
able loud noise as well.
Carrera said, "Even though 1
don't like this, I'll go along with
this...We have a great student
body, but concerns are concerns "
Ramirez suggested that the gv*
would be a good location for tl"
prom, but Saenz worried that the
floor would take a beating
When the vote was taken, the
motion passed, but Falcon and
Zarate voted in opposition and
Ramirez voted to abstain.

The open house is part of a state

recognize the completion of the
three-year automation project; one
of the largest projects of its kind in
the country. FmHA installed 264
computer terminals in Texas and
over 6,000 nationally, Perez said
"We think this computer system
is going to be a big help to our
borrowers, especially family farm-
ers," Perez said. "Once we plug
basic numbers into the machine,
we can help determine which
management decisions will be the
most beneficial. We'll be able to
