Monarchs have lay over
By Melaine Haisler
Butterflies are every-
where1 In the last two weeks
walking to and from class it
hasn't been uncommon to be
bombarded by these beautiful
creatures The Monarchs are in
migration and they've stopped in
Abilene to bless us with their
presence and maybe even serve
as a reminder of the Christian
atmosphere we live in
During migration the
Monarch butterflies travel from
Canada to Mexico It isn't
uncommon for the small winged
creatures to travel 100 miles in
one day In fact one tagged
butterfly covered 286 miles in
twenty-four hours Along the
way females lay their eggs
primarily on milkweed plants
which provide a source of food
for the rapidly growing caterpil-
lar larvae One month later a
fully developed monarch
emerges from its chrysalis and
continues the migration Any-
where from three to five
generations are born on the one
way journey
Let's look at this
By Jeremy Beck
Are mc truly a
Christian Campus or just a
Religious Campus9 It seems to
me that our campus tends to hold
the name of a religious campus
but our emphasis is not on a
religious attitude What are we
more concerned about9
Many people feel that
the break down in our society is
based on the fact that the
religious morals that should be
instilled in our schools have
broken down or in most cases do
not even exist
The question that
comes to my mind is why on a
"rclgious campus" is more
emphasis put en other things
such as athletics or social clubs
than on our religious life office
The budget given to the religious
life office every year by the
board of trustees is a mere $700'
Why9
It must be said that the
staff of the Religious Life Office
is amazing The program that
the chaphn's office puts together
on the small budget that they
have is amazing They have a
full week of ongoing activities
Some things that don't even get
published in any of the campus
in Abilene to serve as a
process a little more closely
When a caterpillar hatches from
the egg it is a tiny creature with
soft skin but firm covering for
its head Its first meal is it's egg
shell then it feeds on surround-
ing leaves A new skin forms
beneath the first one the old one
splits down the back and the
caterpillar wriggles out during
this process called moulting
A week to ten days after
the last moult the caterpillar
becomes full fed and ready to
change to its chrysalis state
After providing a silk web on a
secure surface and entangling its
hind legs the caterpillar hangs
upside down as it's outer tissues
harden into the chrysalis skin
Just by glancing at the
lifeless object it seems quite
uninteresting But an awesome
transformation is taking place
inside and it's not long before
one of the most ethereal of the
creatures of earth emerges Its
exquisite beauty and delicate
structure enhances our world to
an amazing extent
The Monarchs are
characterized with veins ol
calenders There is Prayer and
Praise held every Monday night
in the Maybee Room in the
Campus Center Chapel held
every Tuesday at 9 30 a m in the
chapel WOW (women's bible
study) held every Tuesday in
different locations on the
campus call the Chaplin's office
at 2333 for locations There is
DPS (men's bible study) held
every Tuesday night in the Hunt
Dorm's lobby and freshman
Bible study held Wednesday
night at 9 00 p m in Braniff
Lounge
A full week of Christian
based activies on a very small
budget symbolizes how
dedicated the Religious Life
office truly is to provide active
groups where individuals can
grow in their own individual
spirituality
So why do student's
decided to come to a religious
campus to go to college if they
are not going to symbolize the
true nature of what it means to
be a Christian9
It is pretty sad when
parties have more attendance
than religious activities on and
off campus This campus should
reminder of who we are
wings marked in black and large
white dots upon the black bands
along the margin The rest of the
wings arc tinted with a solid
reddish- brown color
So why did they stop
in Abilene9 Who knows9
Maybe we should humble
ourselves a little and thank God
for their presence After all in
many ways we arc like butter-
flies At first we are caterpil-
lars unknowing and oblivious to
the world around us Then we
form cocoons Many times it's a
shield from what we want to
hide from God Other times it
is a stage of dormancy in which
we become inactive in our faith
But after hearing the Word
witnessing the awesome power
of God and believing that Jesus
Christ is our Lord and Savior
we transform into beautiful
butterflies Each of us arc
characterized differently but in
any case we arc migrating
It's time we start
making our apearance and
emerging from our cocoons as
followers of God
be a campus of a Christian
attitude instead of a party
attitude
Did you come to the
campus because you were a
Methodist and could get a
substancial discount on your
tuition or because you are
wanted to come to a Chnsitian
campus to grow sprititually9 If
you are truly varing a revial in
your spiritualty it must first
come from inside No Christian
group can help you unless you
are willing to give up the
drinking and the partying to
truly exemplify the Christian
attitude The spirituality of this
campus has to come from within
the individual soul and then
combine with others that feel the
same way
So is McMurry truly
devoted to a Christian attitude
On the outside it looks like it
We have a President that is a
devoted Methodist and even
displays a Methodist Cross and
Flame staff in his office we
have a Christian name and put
the Mehodist symbol on every
piece of material hat we can
some how incorporate it in On
the inside however it could be

Scripture tor Devotion of the Holy Word...
Philippians 2:5-11
"Your attitude should be that of
Christ Jesus Who being in very
nature God did not consider
equality with God something to
be grasped but made himself
nothing taking the very nature
of a servant being made in
human likeness And being
found in apperance as a man he
humbled himself and became
questioned as to why we even
have a religious name associated
with our campus
Don't get me wrong
the blame shoud not only be put
on our campus administration
but on students like you and me
I will take just as much blame as
the next person I make
mistakes that do not exemplify
my Christian attitude We are all
humans God knows that we are
going to sin and cave into the
pressures of society The
important thing to remember is
that God will still love us
Take a look at your life
and see if your actions
exemplify a Christian attitude
Does God really want us to go
out and have a good weekend by
getting drunk or high every
chance we get9 Some of us
claim to be true Christians and
we may have exepeted God into
our hearts but do we really
show the world or even our
campus a Christian attiude
This campus can only
truly be a Christian campus with
the dedication of the students to
the Christian cause You don't
have to be Methodist to be a
student at McMurry University
War Whoop
obedient to death even death on
the cross' Therefore God exalted
him to the highest place and
gave him the name that is above
every name that at the name of
Jesus every kneww should bow
in heaven and on earth and under
the earth and every tounge
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
to the glory of God"
We seem to always get caught
up in denominational walls than
we do in Christian standards
Why are we a religious
campus7 Is it because that is
how our campus was founded9
Or is because we want to be
truly about the Christian attitude
and showing the world that God
is alive on our campus and in the
world
Take a look at your own
spirituality and then take a look
at our campus and ask yourself
why you aren't involved in
Religious Life Being a
Christian is more than just going
to church on Sunday or helping
with a youth group It is truly
exemphfing the attiude that a
Christian should have
It takes a collective
group of dedicated individuals to
make a campus a Christian
campus not just a Relgious
campus
