McMurry Indians look
their toll on Millsaps College.
The end result was a well
deserved 38-7 victory.
"The team was unified
and well executed every
assignment in all phases of the
game" said Jason Burgess a
Senior linebacker from
Baytown TX. Burgess had 10
tackles that Saturday. In fact
the entire Indian defense played
exceptionally well. Torbin
Lancaster had six tackles Brian
Valenzuela and Torik Banks each
claimed a sack and Lamont
Morgan blocked a punt and
caused a fumble. In addition
interceptions were made by
Rayford Mills Jason King and
Manse Draper. Jake Maurer also
added to the performance with a
fumble recovery.
"We wore them down
the second half. Our depth took
its toll and the big play by Fred
Rau at the start of the second
half sparked our play " reports
Head Coach Steve Keenum.
Offense also played
extremely well versus Millsaps.
"We're starting to show the
potential that we have as a team
especially on offense" stated
Jason Svoboda a Senior wide
receiver from Floresville TX.
Jeramie Ellison rushed
for 106 yards in only 18 attempts
and Braxton Shaver was 15 of
25 for 236 yards. Mark
Olbcrholtzer had a beautiful 50
yard field goal kick that was
brought back on account of
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
against Millsaps. However the
series resulted in another
Olberholtzer field goal.
Overall the victory was

exceptional execution which
indeed is the plan for future
games. Going into the October
1 1 th game versus Sul Ross State
University the outlook was
positive but also humble. The
conference co-champion team
from last year has many
returners including eight starters
on offense. "They are very
physical and have good
secondary" says Keenum. "We
are going to have to do a good
job tackling."
Burgess added by
saying that "wc must play like
we are capable of playing.
Despite recent wins we need to
play hard for 60 minutes and
never be satisfied."
Unfortunately the game did not
go as planned. McMurry was
defeated 34-14 in Alpine to the
Lobos.
"Maybe this is what we
needed before going into
conference" said Wes Tidwell
a sophomore offensive lineman
from Braosport TX. Turnovers
hurt the Indians badly. Two
fumbles and four interceptions
kept Sul Ross on the board. The
two McMurry touchdowns were
by Jeramie Ellison and Jeff Hale.
Although the defense played
well they were worn down by
the fourth quarter.
Don't get down though
because the team isn't. Fired up
more than ever before the
McMurry football team is about
to go through their hardest week
of workout all year. Hardin-
Simmons will be the opponent
October 18th. Tidwell assures
us though that "with perfection
of plays and getting the little
things together success will be
the outcome."

Golf; a dream since
the age of ten for
Ryan King
By Susan Bailey
Ryan King a Senior
came to McMurry University
from Graham Texas where he
first began playing golf at the
age of ten. He came to
McMurry to play golf and
because he liked the idea of a
small school. Today Ryan
spends three to five hours daily
on the golf course and while not
preparing for a tournament is
qualifying for a spot. Ryan has
been a part of two Conference
Championships while at
McMurry. He feels this year's
team is more relaxed and more
unified a necessity to make
nationals again this year. His
hope for the team is that it stays
strong once he graduates and
continues to win Conference
Championships.
His love for the game is
entwined in his plans for his
future. His aim is to use his
Marketing degree to gain a
position working in Hotel
Resort Management or in the
ever growing golf field. His
inspiration comes from his mom
who says "Follow your dreams
but enjoy the trip."
Ryan wrote this
statement about his feelings for
golf: "Golf is a humbling sport.
It is different everyday. Golf
like all other sports should be
fun and when I can no longer
play for fun I will not play
anymore. Right now I enjoy
playing for McMurry and I
would love to help our team
make it to the National
Tournament in the Spring."
Lady Indians
Conference C
By Melanie Haisler
On the road to their first
Conference Championship is the
McMurry Lady Indian
Volleyball team. The goal is to
put the lirst volleyball
championship banner on the wall
of Kimbrell Arena.
In the past two weeks
the ladies have defeated Austin
College University of Dallas
Mississippi College and
Howard Payne University all in
three games. Perhaps the most
exciting and rewarding win was
to Howard Payne. The Lady
Yellow Jackets have claimed the
past three conference
championships putting
McMurry in second place each
year.
"Wc have a real good
chance of winning conference"
says Sonya Papion a Senior
from Houston TX. "We played
well as a team. Everyone was
confident relaxed and focused.
Cross Country team
By Crystal Lacy
The McMurry Cross
Country team is going the
distance and they are going for
speed. "The cross country
team has tremendous potential
recognizing there is variety and
talent on the team" said Rev.
Libby. Some of the runners
are increasing their time by 5-7
minutes. On average the team
workouts consist of endurance
training running and upper
body weight lifting. Hill
workouts are once a week.
The men are running 6-8 miles
the women 4-6 miles to be
prepared for the conference
meet on October 25 1997 in
Irving Texas at the University
of Dallas.

This is the first year
that the Lady Indians have
broken so many records. Tracee
Niclson holds the record for
career assists and Mandy Findly
holds the record for career hits.
Also the ladies are ranked first
in the Nation for digs.
Although they lost to
Mary-Hardin Baylor the door
for the championship remains
open. Mary-Hardin Baylor
cannot win the conference due to
their present transition from
NCAA Div II to NCAA Div III.

can use all of your support.

numbers of miles and
remembering cross country is
fun is ESSENTIAL!
Two men and three
women will be contenders for
the top five places at the
Conference meet. Each
individual runner is important
to the team but some need
improvement in speed. Key
women runners are Jessica
Thompson Deborah Collins
and Talitha Belcher. David
Chandler and Mitchell
Wolowicz are the key men
runners. "The men and
women stand a good chance as
a team; Mississippi and the
University of Dallas are
competitive schools" said
Jessica Thompson. The goal
of the team is the Regional
Cross Country meet Saturday
November 15 1997 at the
University of South Sewanee
in Tennessee.
