Winning number paces concert
Lang to perform
state title work
The McMurry College Band
Concert at 8:00 p.m. Dec. 9 in the
Ryan Fine Arts Center Little
Theater will feature a marimba
solo by Sophomore Drew Lang
winner of the Music Teachers
National Association state audi-
tions Nov. 25 at Baylor University.
Lang a music major from
Monahans will perform the 10-Minute-long
competition win
ning piece "Concerto for Marim-
ba" by James Basta. He will be
accompanied by Holly Hughes
McMurry assistant music profes-
sor and piano instructor who also
accompanied Lang at the state
auditions.
The concert will include a
variety of compositions ranging
from "Liturgical Music" by Mar-
tin Mailman and "Harvest Hymn"
by Percy Grainger to the seasonal
"Adcste Fidclcs" and popular
"Washington Post" by John Phil-
ip Sousa.
Other selections will include
"Fantasy On A Bell Carol" by
Edward Maddon "Three Pieces
for American Band" by Timothy
Brocgc and "Alleluia! Laudamus
Tc" by Alfred Reed.
The McMurry Band will per-
form at the direction of conductor
Tommy J. Fry.
Lang competed in the state
auditions on marimba and tympa-
ni at the College Division. Judge
for the competition was Richard
Guianguilio principal trumpet for
the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
Winning the state auditions
enables Lang a student of percus-
sion instructor Mike Hoolcy to
compete in the regional auditions
to be held at Southern Methodist
University in Dallas in January.
Finals arc in April in Lousivillc
Ky.
Lang is active in the McMurry
Band Jazz Ensemble Percussion
Ensemble Basketball Band has
performed as percussionist with
the Abilene Philharmonic Orches-
tra for the past two years and
plays professionally in the Abi-
lene area for the David Adams
Big Band and the Dcmonc Trio.
Lang was also all-state percus-
sionist for three years when he
was at Monahans High School.
Art sale show
underway now
McMurry College's annual Faculty-Student
Christmas Art Sale
has been scheduled for today and
Saturday in the lobby of the Ryan
Fine Arts Center.
The art sale to feature over
1000 items will be conducted
from 9 a.m. -7 p.m. (today) and
from 9 a.m. -6 p.m. on Saturday.
The McMurry art faculty will
also conduct a show in the gallery
of the Fine Arts Center through
Dec. 16.
Art faculty and their specialties
include Sherwood Suter watered-
ors oils abstracts and land-
scapes; Catherine Benson oils
and matted color sketches; Robert
Miller portraits and landscapes;
George Holland pottery items;
Marsha Murray soapstone and
alabaster sculptures; Victor Beh-
rens. watercolors; and Terry Gil-
breath bronze sculptures and
bronze casting items.
The gallery will be open from 8
a.m.-5 p.m. daily for the art
show.
The great majority of the items
for sale will be in the S6-S12 price
range. The emphasis will be on
practical art work and functional
pottery items.
Pottery items which are dish-
washer and microwave-safe in-
clude bowls pots candle holders
vegetable steamers fruit dishes
planters Christmas tree orna-
ments and electrical and oil
lamps just to name a few.
Art work in the sale will include
watercolors pastels oils ink and
charcoal drawings and pen and
ink drawings. They will range
from portraits to landscapes to
abstracts
A wide variety of sculptures
will also be featured in the sale.
The works on sale are items
completed by faculty members
and students during the fall
semester. The majority of the
proceeds go to the students.
Approximately 15 percent will go
to the Art Department at McMurry.
