The University of Texas Historical Symposium Committee an-
nounces a formal call for papers for its spring 1982 meeting. The
Symposium is designed to allow history graduate students from all
Texas colleges and universities to present papers, which should be of
fifteen to twenty minutes duration (no more than twelve pages). Grad-
uate students specializing in all fields of historical study are encouraged
to participate. Papers should be received by February 15, 1982. Send
all papers and inquiries to: UT Historical Symposium, 1982, Depart-
ment of History, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78712.
The Center for Great Plains Studies, University of Nebraska, Lin-
coln, will sponsor its fifth annual symposium on March 18-20. Entitled
"Intersections: Studies in the Canadian and American Great Plains,"
the conference will feature papers on the climate and resources, per-
ception of the land, social and institutional determinism, and political
and economic development of the Great Plains. Close to forty Cana-
dian and American scholars will make presentations during the
meeting.
An exciting and excited crowd jammed the ballroom at the Inn on
the Park Hotel on Friday evening, November 6, to feast on lobster and
beef Wellington, to enjoy good conversation, and mainly to participate
in the Texana Auction of the Decade. On Saturday buyers again flocked
to the Inn on the Park to bid on many fine Texana items offered that
day. The two-day affair netted approximately $100oo,ooo for the Asso-
ciation's endowment fund.
A handsomely illustrated catalog provided prospective buyers with
descriptions of more than 200 items. The categories included art,
books, documents and manuscripts, furniture, maps, and specialty items
and excursions.
The top-selling item, Ancel Nunn's "4th of July," a 22" x 44" acrylic,
went for $15,000. The arts category was especially strong, including
works of Wayman Adams, John J. Audubon, John T. Biggers, Harold
Bugbee, Jose Cisneros, William Kolbe, Herman Lungkwitz, Bruce
Marshall, Elisabet Ney, Ancel Nunn, Julian Onderdonk, Robert Pum-
mell, Frank Reaugh, Richard Thompson, J. W. Thrasher, Melvin
Warren, Robert Wood, and others.
Books included the Constitution of the State of West Texas; Consti-
tucion politica del estado libre de Coahuila y Tejas... .; Le Texas; ou,
notice historique sur le Champ-D'Asile; Tom Lea, In the Crucible of
the Sun; and twelve volumes of the Quivera Society publications.321
