Meetings
The eighty-sixth annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Asso-
ciation will be held in Austin at the Marriott Hotel, March 4-6. This
year's program promises a lively and diversified look at current re-
search in Texas studies, preservation, and conservation. Joining us for
a number of the sessions will be members of the Texas Archeological
Society, the Society of Southwest Archivists, the Texas Catholic His-
torical Society, the Texas Historical Commission, the Texas Baptist
Historical Society, the Texas Association of Museums, the Texas Folk-
lore Society, and the Webb Historical Society.
The seventeenth annual Walter Prescott Webb Memorial Lectures
will be held on March 11, 1982, at the University of Texas, Arlington.
The theme of the 1982 Lectures will be "The Family and Historical
Change," and the speakers will be Leslie P. Moch, University of Texas,
Arlington; John Modell, University of Minnesota; Elizabeth Pleck,
Wellesley College; and Louise Tilly, University of Michigan. For

The West Texas Historical Association will hold its annual meeting
March 26-27 in Lubbock at Texas Tech University.
The South Texas Social Studies Association and The Victoria Col-
lege Social Sciences Symposium will hold a joint meeting at Victoria
College on April 2-3, 1982.
William H. McNeill, A. Millikan Distinguished Service Professor at
the University of Chicago, will be the fourth speaker in the Charles
Edmondson Historical Lecture Series at Baylor University on March
31 and April 1, 1982. McNeill's general theme will be "The Great
Frontier: Freedom and Hierarchy in Modern Times." The first lec-
ture, to be delivered at 7:30 Wednesday evening, March 31, will be
titled "Expansion of Civilized Societies in the Age of Sails and Horses."
The second lecture, "Expansion of Civilized Societies in the Age of
Steam and Gasoline," will be given Thursday, April 1, at 9:30 A.M.
