The Dallas Public Library and the East Texas State University
Library have successfully completed the Dallas Mayors Oral History
and Records Project, an eighteen-month program to document on tape
the history of Dallas mayors and their administrations. Alan Mason
and Dr. Gerald Saxon, oral historian for the Dallas Public Library,
conducted the interviews. They collected more than 130 hours of in-
terviews with former Dallas mayors, their families, their associates,
and their rivals. Dr. James Conrad, university archivist at ETSU,
coordinated the project and directed the transcription of the tapes.
Copies of the tapes and transcripts are available in the Archives and
Research Center for Texas and Dallas History at the Dallas Public
Library and at the ETSU Library in Commerce. Microfiche copies of
the oral history transcripts may also be obtained from the ETSU
Archives. In addition to the tapes and transcripts, personal papers,
campaign posters, photographs, and memorabilia have been uncovered
during the course of the project and donated to the archives collection
of the Dallas Public Library.
