Writers yearn for acclaim
In film 'Rich and Famous'
By CHERYL ANTHONY
Arts Editor
The age-old dilemma of com-
promising the best and opting for
second-rate quality with popularity
is the theme of Rich and Famous
now playing at UA Cinema Six.
The characters illustrating the
point are two college girlfriends
who travel the same road seeking
fame and fortune throughout their
adult lives but encounter an Ironic
twist.
Jacqueline Bisset plays the
gifted writer who achieves fame
without fortune through her ar-
tistry In literature. She is an award-
winning novelist called a master
of Irony who upholds her regard
for excellence at the expense of
sacrificing wealth and popularity.
Ironic is the fact that her simple
and brainless friend played by
Candice Bergen becomes both
rich and famous by writing modern
trash and being nominated for the
same national award.
Her career begins with juicy ex-
poses on her famous Hollywood
friends who share the same
stretch of Mallbu Beach. The
public devours this type of gar-
bage giving her the acclaim and
money that go to her head.
Meanwhile the talented Bisset
is struggling through a modified
identity crisis learning who she is
and what type of man she needs to
fill the loneliness in her life. Her
literary prowess runs dry while she
watches her friend dominate the
market with poor fiction.
The two leading actresses have
a good feel for their characters
creating believable people who
have hurts to identify with. They
clash in some good scenes of ver-
bal argument as well as in prin-
ciples as their friendship
undergoes a strain induced by
hunger for notoriety.
The- movie's R rating comes
from the use of profanity and a few
rather lurid scenes.
Rich and Famous effectively
presents its ideas pointing out
that it's posible to be famous and
poor which is hard to do but in
some cases more noble. Although
too long (nearly two hours)
somewhat disjointed and not
superior as a film the movie has
entertainment value and thought
provoking issues. It might appeal
to writers or those with a desire to
fulfill the old cliche and become
both rich and famous.

Up at night
"If your writing doesn't keep you up nights it won't keep anyone
else up."
So says Jacqueline Bisset in Rich and Famous (see review on this
page). In my case the dawn of deadline day approaches and my
writing is keeping me up It's not a matter of continuous revision. So
considering the present circumstances I doubt it would merit your at-
tention after the bedtime hour and keep you up too.
It's not that I have little faith in my use of language. I have the
astonishing ability to evade an issue for several paragraphs if
necessary. I think ("Oh you do do you?") it's a writer's ego defense
mechanism. If I tell myself for six Inches of print that I don't really
have a column and review to write during my normal hours reserved
for dreaming sweet dreams perhaps the fact finally will go away.
Quite simply I'm wondering If my childhood experiences of talking
and walking In my sleep can be transferred to writing In my sleep. A
few hours of Incubation period would be most enjoyable during an
altered state of consciousness slumber.
A few extra hours also might take away the disorientation one ex-
periences while shifting from civilized adherence to respectable
curfews to nocturnal habits. It compares with the "brain freeze" that
comes from eating too much ice cream too quickly: the watery eyes
and head tension won't subside until you slow down and rest awhile.
Perhaps my casualties of the recent flood were an omen of this
week's journalistic brain freeze. My Inspiration drowned along with
my dictionary copyediting textbook and Associated Press Stylebook.
Maybe that illumination Is only temporarily submerged. Surely a rain-
bow is on the horizon.
On the other hand maybe if I continue writing long enough my brain
freeze will melt and I'll get a topic idea to fill my alotted column space.
But that would be useless. Your interest in this piece of near
hackwrltlng probably was frozen several non-Ideas ago anyway.
Either way if your interest in this extended non-essential clause
has kept you swimming through it to the end the rainbow of illumina-
tion does appear later in the sports section and I promise never
to destroy my reputation by an arts column flood again. See Randy
Hylton's column and discover what his favorite childhood bathtub
vocalization was (yes more water.)
